Oh I love the word “practice”. And how easy it is to forget that there can be no mastery without relentless, consistent and brave-hearted practice (especially on the days when you don’t feel like practicing). Success is no accident (big idea). I met a reader once who grew up with Steve Nash. He shared that Nash was always first on the court and last off. And while on the practice court, he’d sometimes push himself so hard physically that he’d throw up. I’d never recommend extremes (you know that). But you get the picture: the guy created his success (as a basketball superstar). Through practice. At the highest level.
Easy to forget that successful people didn’t just wake up that way. They started off ordinary – with a goal – and then focused on the daily small steps required to reach it. And as the days slipped into weeks and the weeks into months and the month into years, their dream became more alive. Each day, they practice.
So….devote to practice.
-practice getting up at 5 am each day. It’ll get easier (that’s what practice does).
-practice being more positive and passionate
-practice being more spectacular at what you do at work (good question: “how would you show up at work if you were the best in the world at what you do?” Start working toward that and your career will skyrocket (how could it not?)
-practice being kinder and more patient
-practice enriching your mind and knowledge base by reading for an hour each day
-practice balancing work and your personal life
-practice getting super fit
Nothing wonderful ever comes without practice. It’s not just a discipline of the best athletes. It’s a discipline of the best human beings. People like you.
