We welcome very special guests Dr. Bill Harrell, Dr. David Gozal, and Dr. David McIntosh! These amazing airway and sleep-disordered breathing / sleep apnea practitioners describe their upcoming medical textbook “Growing Into Breathing Problems: The Collaborative Quest for Lifetime Solutions”. Along with over 25 co-authors on this book, Nicole is honored to have written a 2-part chapter on Myofunctional Therapy. This book, that has been years in the making, will be published by Springer this 2024 year, and it will be a must have for all airway practitioners. In this podcast Nicole also asks some very special questions to Dr. Gozal, Dr. Harrell, and Dr. McIntosh about what they think is the biggest misnomer in the field, and much more.

Dr. Bill Harrell is a distinguished professional in the field of orthodontics. Dr. Harrell’s practice was the first in Alabama and the Southeast to have 3D ConeBeam CT (CBCT) imaging, providing a comprehensive view of the patient’s anatomy, including the teeth, bones of the head and neck, the TM Joints, the Airway and sinuses, and other vital structures. His practice was also the first in the USA to include 3D face imaging and measurements of Nasal Resistance and nasal airflow using Rhinomanometry, Acoustic Rhinometry, and Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF).
Dr. David Gozal currently holds the position of Dean at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and serves as the Vice President for Health Affairs at Marshall University. Renowned for his groundbreaking work, he has pioneered biomarker discovery and leveraged machine learning approaches for diagnosing sleep apnea across all stages of life.
In more recent endeavors, Dr. Gozal has delved into exploring the intricate connections between the gut microbiome and circulating exosomes, unraveling their roles as mechanistic effectors and biomarkers in sleep disorders and associated morbidities. His extensive research, dating back to 1992, has consistently garnered support from NIH grants. With a scholarly footprint comprising over 875 peer-reviewed original articles, an impressive H index of 139, and exceeding 85,000 citations, Dr. Gozal stands among the top 1,000 most cited biomedical scientists globally. In addition to his prolific research output, he has authored more than 175 book chapters and reviews, edited seven books, presented over 1,000 scientific abstracts, and delivered lectures across the globe.
Dr. David McIntosh is a Paediatric ENT Specialist with a particular interest in airway obstruction, facial and dental development and its relationship to ENT airway problems, and middle ear disease. He also specializes in sinus disease and provides opinions on the benefit of revision of previous sinus operations. He is also passionate about Indigenous Health. He has undertaken advanced surgical training in ENT and Head and Neck Surgery and Paediatric training at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.

Nicole Goldfarb, M.A. CCC, SLP- COM® is a Speech-Language Pathologist, Certified Orofacial Myologist, International speaker, author, Ambassador for the Breathe Institute, a Talk Tools educational partner, and she has served on the faculty for the Sleep Education Consortium and the Airway, Sleep, and Pediatrics Pathway (ASAP) program.
