This collection houses only a small fraction, less than 10 percent, of the short stories Guy wrote. There are cheeky stories that extend an obvious moral to pay attention to and ones that delve into psychological horror - almost all provide opportunity for social commentary.
At various points the writing definitely reflects the time, the 1800's, and can be tedious and dry. Other times there is more economy in Maupassant's words. In either regard, he's a good storyteller and his short stories are mostly enjoyable in content.
If you enjoy a reflection of human nature and social life, along with how one is to interact with themselves and society, perhaps give this a shot. Most times, these stories hold up an accurate mirror to Us at large and how we operate in relation to one another. There is much to reflect on in this collection that ranges from Light to Deeply Disturbing and sometimes mix the two. *No Spoilers*. (REVIEW - WEEK 14, YEAR 4)
