Elevate City Church

This summer at Elevate City our church is taking a deep dive together through the book of Galatians and looking into Paul's journey through the early days of the church of Galatia.

The book of Galatians is written by Paul through the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul who was formally Saul was ravaging the early church and had the authority to chase down, arrest and in some cases murder Christians but then one day, as he’s on his way to arrest followers of Jesus — he is knocked off of his horse by Jesus, blinded, and then Jesus calls him to surrender his life to him and to build his church.

So Paul and Barnabas planted churches in Galatia and the gospel is spreading it’s great... But then there’s a problem... there arose this group of Jewish leaders known as the Judaizers who thought that Paul was watering down the Bible, and they began to preach a gospel of "Legalism."

They couldn’t fathom believing that salvation really could be received freely. The problem with the mindset of legalism is that it stands in opposition to the Biblical message of Grace.

Galatians 1:6-7: I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

Because the words of this letter from Paul are so urgent and he is so passionate, it’s as if he is writing them in ALL CAPS. Paul is so passionate that at the end of the letter in chapter 6:11 he says “see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand”

Before Paul ever calls out their false Gospel, he reminds them of the true Gospel.

1. There is a God and He is good

2. There’s a problem, we have sinned.

3. There is Hope and His name is Jesus.

4. There is a response, the surrender of my life.
