If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, part of the reason could be either you’re not getting enough healthy fats in your diet, or you’re not absorbing the fats in your diet. So in today’s show, I want to talk specifically about Docosahexaenoic acid, better known as DHA. And it’s a very important component that’s found in omega threes. Enjoy the show. Hello, everyone. It’s Dr. Sam, I’d like to welcome you to my EyeClarity podcast. This is a show that offers cutting-edge information on how to improve your vision and overall wellness through holistic methods. I so appreciate you spending part of your day with me. If you have questions, you can send them to hello@drsamberene.com. Now to the latest EyeClarity episode.

Hey, everyone, its Dr. Sam, and I’d like to welcome you in today. Thanks for being part of the show. So I want to announce my upcoming retreat workshop seminar. This is going to be happening October 7, through the 9th. It’s a weekend workshop immersion. I like to call it the vision sanctuary retreat. You know, I used to lead a lot of retreats at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California when I was a faculty member there. And even before that, I used to do retreats in Hawaii, and New Mexico, New York. And I find that is a really great venue because you get to be with a community of people who are like minded. And they’re usually pretty focused pretty serious. In Well, let’s say creating change within themselves.

So even though this is an online workshop, we still come together in a forcefield. Where, because we are together, and although it’s virtual, I’ve done this enough to know that once I start opening the door, and we kind of crack it open, and we start doing some of the processes and practices that I have developed, that people can make major changes, you can see some of my testimonials, people really shifts in the three days. And you know, we have to develop enough momentum to get enough speed to be able to break through and make the changes we need to make. And, of course, we’re not just talking about your eyes and vision. But in this particular retreat, the focus is on mind brain body health. Of course, we’re going to use the eyes as one of the main portals to do that. So we’ll be exploring some physical therapy, things we’ll be learning about, what nutritional protocols should you be doing. We’re going to look at color therapy and experience color, light and sound, vibrational healing, and even aromatherapy I’m going to give you a crash course, aromatherapy one on one a one on how to use essential oils to boost your eye health and overall wellness. So if you want to sign up, you can do so by going to my website, drsambere.com.

You can also send us an email hello@drsamberne.com. The retreat will be recorded for participants and you’ll be able to listen to the retreat for 60 days after the last day, October 9 60 days, so you get two months. And also you get 10% discount on all my supplements and great products. So sign up now, we look forward to having you on the retreat. So today’s show, I want to talk about the importance of healthy fats. You know, our brain is almost 60% fat, you know that our neurons and axons and all the all the things the structures in the brain need fat in order to live well. And I would include our eyes in that discussion. 50% of the retina is made up of fatty acids.

04:10

If you suffer dry eye syndrome, part of the reason could be either you’re not getting enough healthy fats in your diet or you’re not absorbing the fats in your diet. So in today’s show, I want to talk specifically about Docosahexaenoic acid, this is better known as d H A. And it’s a very important component that’s found in omega threes. It’s a poly unsaturated fatty acid. DHA DHA is concentrated in the gray matter. In our brain. It’s important for the health of the neurons, actually the membranes of the neurons DHA plays a role in the following things the structure of our mitochondria. I’ve talked about it and other shows that just for the eyes, the eyes have one of the highest concentrations of mitochondria. These are very important energy centers that produce ATP, that help us get rid of metabolic waste and absorb better nutrients.

So DHA is important for our mitochondria health, the release of neurotransmitters, the expression of DNA, the creation of myelin. Myelin is the insulator that is around the neurons. And DHA is also super important for reducing inflammation. You know, inflammation is one of the biggest issues that we have today in our body. And, of course, we have the gut inflammation, we have joint inflammation, we’ve got eye inflammation. So DHA is very helpful in being able to reduce inflammation. DHA also helps the frontal lobes of the brain work better. This is where we have our executive function. And this is executive function means we know how to pay attention, we’re able to problem solve, we can plan ahead. A lot of kids I work with, either aren’t able to get into their executive function brain or they’ve bypassed integrating some of the movement patterns in their brainstem and cerebellum. So they spend all their time in their executive function. But there isn’t the foundation and the experiences they need to have in other parts of the brain. And DHA is important not only for adults, but it’s an important for children.

So it’s important to note that we don’t make DHA. And when we ingest it, the brain likes to hold on to it. And in some some studies I’ve seen the estimated half life of DHA in the human brain is over two years. So the brain is very tenacious and being able to hold on to this very important ingredient. So let’s talk research for a minute. There was a study that was done in 2010. It’s called the Midas study. Mid abs 485 Healthy elderly patients over the age of 70 had self reported memory complaints. So in the study, they received either 900 milligrams of DHA or placebo. And they did this for 24 weeks every day. And at the end of the study, the group who received the DHA reported an improvement in things like visual recognition memory, visual memory, and other forms of concentration. And the blood DHA that the researchers were measuring. They were higher and were these people who took the DHA where the blood levels were higher. They were the folks that had better memory. You know in some of my posts, I talk about a blood marker called homocysteine

09:04

and this is pretty basic science but when your homocysteine levels are elevated, you have a higher risk of developing things like coronary heart disease, vascular disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and things like Alzheimer’s and dementia. And it is noted that when you increase the DHEA levels what happens is the homocysteine levels begin to come down. And so this is this is a way when you get that blood marker reading and it’s high. This is a very easy way for you to start bringing the elevated homocysteine back into balance. So my suggestion and would be if you can to supplement with about 800 milligrams a day of the DHA, part of the Omega three. One of my favorite dietary supplements is a company called metagenics. They do a lot of testing with their omega threes.

And I specifically like the Omega Genex 1000, you can get it in a liquid liquid form capsule form. And again, you’re looking for that target of a minimum of 800 milligrams a day of the DHA. I think overall, I would like somewhere between two and 3000 milligrams a day to really boost your nervous system health, your brain health, your eye health, your cardiovascular health, and so on. Now, if you’re vegan or vegetarian and you can’t do fish oil, there now sources that you can get that our algae derived. So just to know that so DHA makes a huge difference in the overall configuration or constellation in improving your eye health and your overall wellness. So check it out. I think it’s something that we all should be taking. So that’s my show for today. I want to thank you for tuning in. Until next time, take care.

Thank you for listening. I hope you learned something from the EyeClarity podcast show today. If you enjoyed the episode, make sure to subscribe on iTunes or Spotify and leave a review. See you here next time.
