On today’s episode, I’m talking to Olympian and coach Leah Stancil about serving your mission.
Leah is the current head coach for Tulane swimming and diving and one of just two Black woman head coaches in DI swimming. As an athlete herself, Leah competed for her home country of Barbados in two Olympics, reaching the finals in 1996. Leah always knew that she wanted to help athletes overcome their struggles and found that coaching gave her the chance to do just that while working one-on-one with swimmers on the frontlines of her sport.
We talk about:

  • How Leah realized that her impressive resume would be viewed differently if she were white or a man.
  • When Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer before her second year as head coach, she was fortunately told to focus on her health. She both relied on her husband for support and learned to delegate to her coaching staff.
  • Leah tries to recognize the “yeah, but” moments in her self-talk that keep her from appreciating her day-to-day accomplishments.
