During the first ChinaTalk webinar, we will talk with George Magnus, independent economist and commentator on Chinese affairs, Research Associate at the China Centre, at Oxford University, and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

The conversation will focus on China relations with the United States in the economic and political dimensions. We will discuss the American perception of the Chinese threat, the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI), Chinese ambitions and the global response they elicit, the role and influence of Europe on the rising tensions between the two world economic powers, and the barriers to Chinese growth, such as demography and the middle-income trap.

George Magnus independent economist and commentator, Research Associate at the China Centre, Oxford University, and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Over the years, he has held numerous positions, including Senior Economic Adviser at UBS Investment Bank, Chief Economist at SG Warburg (1987-1995), senior positions at Laurie Milbank/Chase Securities, Bank of America in London and San Francisco. George writes for the Financial Times, Times, Daily Telegraph, Bloomberg, South China Morning Post, Prospect Magazine, theArticle.com, and CapX, and is a contributor to many UK and international TV and radio programs. His books include “The Age of Aging” (2008), “Uprising: will emerging markets shape or shake the world economy?” (2011), and “Red Flags: why Xi’s China is in Jeopardy” (2018, Yale UP). Prof. Marcin Jacoby
Sinologist, translator, expert on socio-political processes in East Asia, particularly China and Republic of Korea. He is also Head of the Department of Asian Studies at SWPS University, where he teaches literature, art, and cultural diplomacy in China and East Asian.

Zbigniew Niesiobędzki, Ph.D.
Economist with a career associated with investment funds. Over the years, he worked for Deloitte, and served as board member and member of supervisory boards of many companies in the telecommunications, construction, and furniture sectors. Currently, he is President of the Polish Chinese Business Council.
