Within this episode I had the chance to speak with Kevin J. Rhodes, PhD. Kevin is an experienced electrified vehicle engineer with a demonstrated history of delivering results in the automotive industry. He is skilled in materials, batteries, product development, chemistry, research, and leading large teams of engineers to address complex issues. He earned his doctorate in materials science and engineering (electrochemical materials emphasis) at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and post-doctorate certifications in advanced rietveld refinement and advanced electrified powertrain engineering at International Center for Diffraction Data. During his career he spent over 8 years at Ford where he spent a large portion of his time as Supervisor of Advanced Electrified Powertrain Systems where he would supervise an engineering team and lead development of next generation Front Wheel Drive Electrified Powertrain System designs for Ford and Lincoln electrified products (FHEV, PHEV, BEV, & Autonomous). After his time at Ford he worked at AVL a Mobility Technology Company as a Chief Engineer of Electrification. Following this experience he served as Vice President of Battery Systems and Applications Development at Lyten, within this position he would drive the integration of Lyten Lithium Sulfur technology into commercial applications. Today he is the CEO and Founder of Kevin Rhodes Consulting where he provides expert technical consulting using a structured approach to solving energy storage engineering challenges in secondary batteries including engineering development, manufacturing, and integration at the materials, cell, module, pack, and powertrain system levels. Within this episode we discussed many topics including the energy grid, battery storage capabilities, electric vehicles, electrification of aviation and aerospace, environmental impacts of Li-ion batteries and next generation batteries, geopolitical aspects of producing Li-ion batteries, his favorite Sci-Fi books, advice to students and people just starting within their career, nuclear energy, going to mars, some questions from the curiosity tour, and much more!
