On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. We are back! It's been a minute. This is episode 201, the crazy drunken 200th episode will come soon, so this is episode 201. First bit of news is the Mk5 Toyota Supra is now coming with a third pedal, which is awesome news; three pedal all the things! We then talk about the 400Z which we all now like unanimously, and the Toyota GR Corolla. Then we talk about how Subaru is completely in the toilet, and car crashes we've seen lately. We take a quick break, to ensure the existence of this episode, and come back talking about the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and do some shout outs. We then talk about some of what we've done to our cars since we've been off air. And we end talking about nonsense, some things haven't changed. Then Mitch admits to a bit of a cockup, and Matt talks admits to a bit of a cockup and to cooking Mitch's old Hilux, and Joel fixed his cock up. Hey. It's been a minute. Is that a new shirt? Looks nice. Anyways, here's episode 198! We kick off with a bit of bollocks, before breaking into some news. Chrysler has left Australia, which we don't really care much about, though it does mean the death of the affordable V8. We then talk about Dodge moving towards electric "muscle cars" and killing off their V8's. Porsche is FINALLY making a Cayman GT4 RS by shoehorning the GT3 engine in the back. We then talk about the Toyota GR86 being delayed in Australia, yet the new Subaru BRZ will still be available soon - but there will only be 500 cars available initially (and they're probably all accounted for), and the GR Corolla coming to Australia. A group of Japanese manufacturers are teaming up to create carbon-neutral fuels. And Tesla's app bugged out and locked people out of their cars globally. We then talk about what we've done to our cars lately! Find us on Facebook , Instagram , Twitter and at www.gearsandbeersmedia.com / www.unashamedlyunprofessional.com We have a merch shop!…

We are back for episode 197! Then we talk about the visual monstrosity that is the 2022 Subaru WRX which is coming to Australia mid-2022 and will be offered with a 6-speed manual and a CVT (if you hate yourself). We then go on about Volkswagen's excessive and unnecessary range offered in Australia, and their million different sizes of SUV offered. And we talk about old Hondas for a bit, and ask what hot hatch we'd pick. We then end on Car Wold Cup. Hey, look at that, this episode is up on the right day! Fancy that. There's some actual automotive news this week, which is a nice change of pace, and is very welcome. We kick off the news with the new Toyota GazooRacing 86, the naturally aspirated FA24 powered successor to the wonderful GT86. We then talk about the new "400" Zed, with a 400hp twin-turbo V6, designed to tackle the MkV Supra with a proper 6-speed manual, and Barra-swapped Mustangs, then Matt makes one of his biggest takes by arguing that the General Motors LS-engine is the best engine of all time. We then talk about the new Aventador-based 6.5L V12 with electric-assist 803hp Lamborghini Countach, which we all very much like. We briefly then talk about Honda/Acura teasing a new Integra for 2022, but we don't know anything about it yet, and then we talk about the Land Rover Defender getting a big whomping V8 which will be coming to Australia.... If you have f#ck you money at $210,000 AUD. We then end on the Car World Cup, and in this week, we're in France. Mitch kicks off the news with the 2022 BMW 2 Series being leaked online, and it's an interesting looking thing, then Matt gets us playing a mini game of Would You Rather with Porsche Boxters, and GT86's, which is entirely unusual for us to talk about 86's. We then talk about how in the world Joseph daily's his GT86 racecar, and then we talk about Silvias, and the exciting world of car insurance. Mitch then talks about getting booked for speeding after leaving Joseph's house after recording a podcast a few weeks ago, and then we reminisce over car related memories from our youth. Josepth then talks about Dodge news; Dodge has announced the first ever electric muscle car which will be blessed with the original Dodge logo, and the Hyunda i20N has been delayed until Octovber and will be priced from $32,990 before on roads. Yeah, sorry it's been a month, our bad. Mitch kicks off the news with Ford America looking at adding "pop-up" style advertisements on in-car displays, then Mitch talks about Lamborghini beginning to phase out internal combustion engines entirely by 2030, and that Jeep Australia wins the case to block Mahindra from selling the Jeep-looking Thar in Australia Joseph then talks about the Hyundai i30N getting a facelift, and a very very slight performance boost, but now sells for $45,000, and then Joseph talks about the new Ford Maverick small-sized "Pick-Up". Mitch then talks about the 2022 Subaru BRZ being due in Australian showrooms in December this year, and that the 79 Series LandCruiser will continue to have the V8 diesel for the time being, which is awesome. We then talk about Toyota's GR 300 Series LandCruiser, GR Yaris, and GR Corolla, and the next LandCruiser Prado due in November 2022 and will feature a hybrid powertrain. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We kick off this week's episode with usual bollocks, before Joseph kicks off the news. The first bit of news is about Jeep trying to stop Mahindra from selling their Wrangler-like Thar 4x4 in Australia. Joseph then talks about Toyota making a GazooRacing Hilux, which will be competing in the Dakar Rally. Then we talk a little about the fuel shortage in America, and a bit about the fuel situation in Australia. Joseph then talks about Ford Australia's cock up (lies) about the Australian version of the Ford Mustang Mach1, unsurprisingly, we get shafted with the spec. Matt then talks about Mitsubishi finally killing off the Pajero, from which we talk about the current Mitsubishi line up (and apparently the CJ Lancer has been killed off). Then we talk about the rather high price of the 5-Door variant of the Suzuki Jimny. Mitch and Joseph then talk about the battle to get Toyota Techstream diagnostics software working, and Joseph talks about his new helmet setup. We then end on Car World Cup game. We kick off this episode with Matt talking about Ford advertising the Mach 1 Mustang here in Australia. Mitch then talks about the International Olympic Committee including simracing in a digital Olympics via what is essentially GranTurismo Academy. Mitch then talks about the 300-Series' styling that was recently leaked online, which may be just for the Middle Eastern market; Australia, Japan, and other markets expected to get a different front end. Joseph then has another Public Service Announcement regarding our listeners who may be Dacia and Renault buyers, and then gets us talking about the new Ferrari 812 VS "Versione Speciale", that features a naturally-aspirated 9,500rpm V12 that pushes 610kw. Mitch then talks about the new GWM (Great Wall Motors) 2021 Baja Snake: Shelby dual-cab ute, that has NOTHING to do with Shelby, despite sharing the Shelby trade-marked stripe and name. Then Mitch talks about Honda going all electric by 2040, and Brabham will be bringing manufacturing to Australia with a new supercar.... Allegedly, and a Subaru 22B selling for over $400,000 AUD on Bring-A-Trailer in the US. Joseph then talks about the Valencia Formula E race becoming a joke, as more than half the field ran out of battery juice due to the race having 5 safety cars. Mitch then talks about Porsche investing into a firm that produces synthetic fuels for their Motorsport pursuits, and alternative fuels. Joseph then talks about the latest Targa Tasmania having 3 deaths in one weekend. We then end on the game. We are back for episode 186 (though we say it’s 187, it’s not)! After usual bollocks, we talk about – and Mitch rants about – Subaru releasing a dual-cab ute called the Brumby, and seems like it’ll be based on the Toyota Hilux. Mitch then talk about Ferrari releasing the F171, a new 522kw ‘supercar’ powered by a hybrid V6, which is terribly sad, old man Enzo must be rolling in his grave, before talking about Ferrari making a return to LeMans in the new ‘Hypercar’ class (which replaces the LMP1 class). Matt then talks about the Australian automotive sales stats for February 2021. Then Matt goes on a bit of a rant about Volkswagen’s ridiculous SUV-focuses range, then the Range Rover and the Defender, and Matt talks about the RAM TRX (which we have already talked about, but whatever), and the new Hyundai Ioniq 5. Joseph then talks about the new Mitsubishi Express Van – which is just a rebadged Renault Traffic – being the first ever vehicle to get a zero-start ANCAP safety rating, and Mitch finally gets to talk about the new 5.0L Supercharged V8 coming to the Range Rover Defender. Then we talk about AliExpress, Mitch’s favourite website, and Joseph gives an update on how his new differential in his GT86 is going, and Matt talks about what’s being done to his LandCruiser. This is probably our most left-of-field start to an episode ever... Joseph somewhat kicks off the news - what there is of it - this week with news about the Porsche GT3 RS (ps. we never came back around to Mitch's Porsche pick, we're not very good at our jerbs), and then Matt clarifies the Subaru Impreza/WRX/STi breakups. We then suggest what car Joseph should get to be a new daily driver, as the 86 is becoming a little too racecar for daily driver duties anymore. Matt then talks about the Mk8 Golf R Wagon, and Joseph talks about the new Subaru Levorg, and an Amarok/Ranger based Land Rover Defender, and then we argue semantics. We then talk about the GR Camry, which we really like, and a Tesla Model 2, and the concept Mazda 6. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

Late again. My bad, my bad. Matt isn't with us this week, but in his absence, we still managed to smash out a banger of an episode for your earholes. After some bollocks, Mitch kicks off the news with a bit more leakage from the Toyota marque around the 300 Series LandCruiser... And sadly, it does seem like the next Cruiser will have a 3.5L-hybrid V6 twin-turbo petrol, and potentially a 3.3L V6 turbo diesel... From which we talk about how it's time to move on from the 2JZ. Then we briefly talk about Holden having ZERO sales for January 2021. Joseph then talks news from across the pond, the new Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing. We then talk about the rumours and lazy renders surrounding the 5th-gen WRX due in Australia in 2022 with the FA24DIT, and the ven more lazy rumours surrounding the Nissan 400Z. Then we talk about the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63.... Which will have a spooly-boi 2.0L 4-banger from the A45S, plus a hybrid system, from which we then talk about Diesel's continued popularity in Australia, and then we end on general nonsense and a discussion on gearing. We are back! This week, Mitch kicks off the episode with a tale from his Saturday night concrete-sleeping adventure. Joseph then breaks into a real news topic by talking about the new 2021 BMW M5 CS. Matt then issues us a challenge by trying to find a 4x4 or a sports car that appears to not have been affected by the Covid Tax. Joseph then brings back the news by talking about SSC Tuatara actually breaking the high-speed record for real this time, by hitting 455km/h, and LMCT+ buying the most expensive vehicle sold at auction in Australia by buying one of the very last HSV GTSR-W1 Maloo for a smidge over $1million Aussie Dollarydoos. Mitch then talks about the updates to the Tesla Model S and X range, specifically the Plaid+ model variant of the Model S. Joseph then talks about some weird and crazy car laws in Queensland. Yeah, it's late, but shhhh. We kick off the news this week with Joseph talking about the apparently 'new' Jeep Grand Cherokee, which looks a helluva lot like the old Grand Cherokee. Mitch then talks about FCA and PSA making it Facebook Official and forming a new group 'Stellantis'. Matt then talks about how 66% of Ford Australia's sales is the Ranger, which is causing some concern within the ranks of Ford Australia as the next Ranger is a shared platform with the Volkswagen Amarok, from which we talk about the Ford Bronco not coming to RHD markets and 'Murican "trucks". Mitch then talks about Lada bringing out a new Niva, while still selling the OG Niva, and BMW coming out with their first 'M' electric car, the i4 M, and the Mustang will more-than-likely only be offered with an electric drivetrain by the end of the decade, but the next-generation Mustang due in 2023 might get a new 6.8L V8, and Hyundai ending all development on new diesel engines. We then talk about how a little while ago we asked for negative reviews, and we got one! Mitch then talks about what he's done to the Prado and the Hilux, before Joseph and Matt talk about what they've done to Joseph GT86. We are back! Happy 2021! We're sorry this episode is later than we had hoped, Corona decided to do an Empire and it striked back and buggered our plans to get back into your ear-holes last week. Anyways, we're back now. We had to re-record this week as GarageBand decided to F us and corrupt our first attempt at this episode, but we persevered. Matt then kicks off the news with a Finnish tyre company wanting to sell 'Lifelong tyres', and the new Ford Ranger has been spied in camo and it looks "very F150-y" and it'll be a shared platform with the next Volkswagen Amarok. Joseph then talks about Toyota's new GR010 LMP1 race-car, and Nissan pretty much gearing up to release the 400Z which will, allegedly, look exactly like the 400Z Prototype. Mitch then talks about Ken Block and Ford getting a divorce and seeing other people; ie, they've parted ways. Ken might potentially go back to Subaru. Then Mitch talks about the new Singer ACS Safari/Rally 911; a two-off commission by a rich bloke. Joseph then talks about BMW shitting the bed with the new M2 CS promotional video, which features the audio-track of an Audi V10 super-imposed over the video... Basically, BMW is having an identity crisis at the moment. Joseph then talks about GM's crap new logo that is just pure crap. Mitch then goes on a rant about how he got banned from commenting on Ozzy Tyres' Facebook page, then Joseph and Mitch then talk about getting OBD2 readers for their cars, and we talk about Mitch's new Android head unit and GME UHF. We're back for episode 177! This week we start off with a bit of bollocks, as per usual, before Joseph kicks start the News. The first bit of news this week is the wonderful announcement from Audi that they're dropping their Formula E campaign, and will be returning to Le Mans endurance and Dakkar. Mitch then talks about Porsche teasing the new (992) 911 GT3 RS! It will be a 4.0L naturally-aspirated flat 6, with an optional manual transmission, among other improvements over the out-going 991 generation GT3. We then talk about a Porsche GT2 RS smashing the production car lap record at Mount Panorama during 'Challenge Bathurst'. Matt then gets us to have a conversation, by starting off by making it a game... Of sorts. We then end with a different take on the Forza-style engine swap game we played from a few weeks back; this week, we have to pick a 6-cylinder engine to put into a current production car. Yeah, my bad, sorry this week's episode is late. This week, we kick off with Mitch getting mad at Matt for a take from last week, before breaking into a bit of news. The news this weeks kicks off with news that Toyota will be turning their 'Crown' sedan into a Crown front-wheel drive SUV, then Mitch rants about the oversupply of small SUV's in the market, and shitty drivers in general. We then talk about the new 'GWM' (Great Wall Motors) 'Canon' dual-cab ute, and then we talk about Mighty Car Mods and their recent partnerships with Activision / Call Of Duty, and Keith Urban. Joseph then answers listener Simon's question about whether any of us have ever had a horrible experience getting an alignment. We then talk about general bollocks and video games, before we play Joseph's new Safari game. Hey, would you look at that? This week we're up ontime! We kick off the news with the marketing release of the 2022 Subaru BRZ, larger engine, marginally larger body, no official word on pricing or availability. We then talk about Lotus coming out with a bloody SUV... Colin Chapman must be rolling in his grave, and Joseph talks about a new Hemi-powered Jeep Wrangler that will only be sold in America, and the GR Yaris is sold out until end of next year; not including the 'Rallye' variant. Then Mitch gets it wrong about the Gazoo Racing CH-R. Joel then provides some actual news for a change, claiming that Lotus will make one more ICE model before transitioning entirely to an electric monel lineup. Joseph then talks about Mercedes-AMG breaking the Nurburgring (production car) Lap Record with their GT Black Series, beating the Porsche GT2RS (not the MR one) by 1.354 seconds. We then play Joseph's new game, which is basically the engine-swap feature in Forza, which was a lot of fun. When I said last week that we'd return to our regularly scheduled programming, I should have considered the fact that Matt would drop the ball and not send me the episode file to edit... So, blame him this week. After some usual bollocks, Joseph kicks off the news with Toyota talking trash about Tesla and Elon Musk, and World Time Attack Challenge 2021 might be held at night as Sydney Motorsports Park is fully illuminated. Joseph then talks about the new MG's new electric ZS SUV. We then talk some nonsense about getting old and not being able to drive low fun cars any more, before we break into Matt's newest favorite game 'The Debate'. Yeah, sorry it's late. Moving house is a complete kick to the balls. This week starts off with 10 plus minutes of nonsense, before we FINALLY get into gear and talk about some news, starting with the new Nissan Navara... Well, the facelift Navara. We then talk about the Australian economy, and Mitch filing a PayPal dispute over the Lokka he ordered, and Alibaba brands. We then ask you, our wonderful audience, for your best automotive 'hot takes'; tell us on out Faceballs! We then play the Positive / Negative game. We are back for episode 172! This week we're a bit off the rails, and start off with talking some absolute nonsense that's not relevant to anyone outside of our city. Joseph kicks off the news with the conspiracy surrounding the SSC Tuatara claimed world record, with compelling claims from large YouTubers that SSC had faked the video, and then we talk about a Russian YouTuber setting his $160,000 AMG on fire, and Toyota providing a 10 year warranty on the DPF burn off 'fixes'. Matt then asks us what out favourite Holden of all time is, before we then talk about the Hennessey VelociRaptor Ford Bronco, and then Matt asks us what our favorite car and least favorite car that has been released since we started the podcast. Mitch then talks about his progress with the #Shitegra, and Joseph talks about his thoughts behind eventually going turbo and a new present he's bought for his GT86.
