The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated disparities within Minnesota's health care system that have existed for decades. Black, brown and Native Minnesotans died at a higher rate from the virus than their white neighbors, and it took them longer to get vaccinated. As a result, health care and community leaders promised to renew their efforts to help all Minnesotans get access to quality, affordable care. Five years later, how’s that going? North Star Journey Live, a event series from MPR News, took that question to Mandy’s Coffee & Cafe in Red Wing on March 26 to get an honest assessment from community leaders who are doing the work every day. As of today, over 600 cases of measles have been reported across 22 states — the largest outbreak the U.S. has seen in more than a decade. Health experts say a combination of factors is driving the surge: increased international travel, communities with low vaccination rates and misinformation that continues to undermine public trust in vaccines. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It spreads quickly, especially among those who aren’t vaccinated for it. It can lead to severe symptoms, especially for children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. So how worried should we be here in Minnesota? How prepared is our public health system to respond if cases rise in our state? And what can we do as a community to stop the spread? Weather forecasts and climate research could be threatened by the recent Trump administration job cuts at federal agencies. The National Weather Service and its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cut hundreds of jobs in late February. If those cuts move forward, nearly 20 percent of NOAA’s 13,000-person workforce would be eliminated. During President Donald Trump’s first week of his second term, he signed an executive order that paused the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. Later, the White House froze all federal funding that goes to organizations who welcome and support refugees coming into the U.S. But last week, a federal judge in Seattle blocked Trump’s efforts to suspend the system for resettling refugees. The judge ruled that while the president has broad authority over who comes into the country, he cannot cancel the law Congress passed to establish the program. However, the Justice Department said it would consider a quick appeal, saying Trump’s actions are well within his authority. MPR News host Angela Davis and her guests talk about the federal refugee program and how the Trump administration directives are affecting refugee resettlement efforts in Minnesota. Guests: Micaela Schuneman is the senior director of immigration and refugee services for the International Institute of Minnesota — a social service agency that offers refugee, immigration and citizenship services. How did your family end up in Minnesota? Do you know the story of your ancestors’ journey? In the 1800s, immigrants to our region primarily came from Scandinavia and Germany. More recently, major populations have come to Minnesota from Laos, Somalia, Mexico, Liberia, Ecuador, Afghanistan and India. In fact, almost 500,000 people who live in Minnesota today were born outside of the United States. But behind the where is also a why . And over time, those narratives can get lost if not recorded. High blood pressure is one of the most common health risks in the U.S. — and most people don’t even know that they have it. It’s called the “silent killer” because people with high blood pressure often have no symptoms. And yet, over time, it can lead to serious problems like heart disease, strokes and kidney failure. New data shows that high blood pressure also is becoming more common among young people. Fourteen percent of children and teens in the country either have high blood pressure or are heading toward it, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. The podcast Sold a Story explores how a generation of children has been taught to read based on a flawed idea. The consequences can be seen in the lives of millions of struggling students across the country. Over a third of Minnesota fourth graders cannot read at a basic level, according to scores released last month by the National Assessment of Education Progress. The Sold a Story series was one of the most-shared shows on Apple Podcasts when it came out in 2023 and one of Time magazine’s top podcasts of the year. It spurred 25 states — including Minnesota — to pass new laws regarding reading instruction. The original 10 episodes explain the rise of this entrenched approach to reading instruction, who benefited from it and how it persisted despite cognitive science research that exposed its flaws. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with colleagues who worked on Sold a Story about its impact and new episodes coming out this month looking at solutions. The Minneapolis Police Department has spent a lot of time in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons. It’s operating under a court-ordered agreement with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights after investigators in 2022 found a pattern of racism in Minneapolis policing that violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act. In late December, MPD and the U.S. Justice Department reached an agreement on a federal consent decree that would mandate additional changes. It still needs the approval of a federal judge, who has not set a timeline for considering it. Going forward, how can Minneapolis build trust between police and community members? MPR News host Angela Davis presents an audio documentary about her experiences traveling to Montgomery, Ala., with a group of Minneapolis police officers and Black community members working to bridge the divide. They’re part of an ambitious effort called the Police and Black Men Project . Eight years ago, following the police killing of Philando Castile in a Twin Cities suburb , the group started meeting regularly to talk about repairing and building relationships between police and the people they serve. On the Alabama trip, they toured museums and historical sites telling the story of slavery, racial segregation and mass incarceration in America. Then they sat down in small groups and talked about what they’d seen and heard. The goal was to connect the past to the present, create a better understanding of the distrust that exists today and learn how to talk about it. They invited Angela and producer Stephen Smith to tag along, observe and record their intimate discussions. Listen to Angela’s Alabama scrapbook and check out her reporter’s notebook story online that’s filled with insights and photos from the trip.
