64. How to Manage Pressure as a First-Gen LATINA
Manage episode 430479132 series 3475812
Do you feel pressured to succeed in life as a First-Gen Latina?
First-generation Latinas face unique difficulties. We feel the pressure to achieve the “American Dream” via good jobs, earning a stable paycheck, and status. We also feel the pressure to prove our worth by conforming to the “traditional” Latinx gender roles like marrying young, being family-orientated, and knowing how to cook. These pressures can try to sabotage us as we continuously build the lives we dream of.
It can feel like our definitions of success get confusing.
How do we find the balance between the two worlds?
In this week’s Yes Mujer Build It! episode, I share some of the pressures of being a First-Gen Latina and how to manage it. Pressures like being a top performer at work or knowing how to make black beans from scratch. We feel tremendous pressure to fit into these two very different worlds.
The first step in managing these pressures is to acknowledge that they exist within us.
Remember your definition of success doesn’t have to be either American or Latinidad. In fact, you can define your success as having the best of both.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How to acknowledge the pressures of being a First-Gen Latina.
- How to navigate the definitions of “success” in both American and Latinx cultures.
- How to manage the pressures by asking yourself powerful questions.
- Why it is important to choose the cultural values and traditions that matter to you most.
- How to let go of Beliefs from either world that no longer serve you.
- How to thrive with all the pressures
