"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

Allison Lynch is a writer, artist, competitive runner and sports marketing professional. Allison has 12 years of experience in brand marketing and communications, specializing in sports technology, running, and fitness. She’s worked for companies like WHOOP and COROS. I was inspired to invite Allison on this podcast after discovering her work and talent for writing. She wrote a very interesting Substack post on Matt Trappe's newsletter “ A matter of brand ”, which I really suggest following and subscribing, that is called "Athletes vs influencers: the bubble has burst". I have been following Allison since then and here we are now. In today’s conversation we talk about the current state of the running universe, the evolution we’ve seen in the past 15 years, with running and outdoor brands progressively shifting away from performance to focus more on lifestyle and fashion, the athletes vs influencers dynamic, how can athletes provide value to themselves and to the brands they work for, how can companies help the athletes build their brand and audience on different platforms. In this short series of episodes that I recorded with Vic, we’re going to learn more about the topic of nutrition for endurance athletes, without pretending to exhaust the topic, but with the aim to give some practical, handy knowledge that you can apply to your own training and racing. Matt Daniels is a good friend of mine - we’ve known each other since 2016 - and a great, great athlete and mentor. He lives in Boulder, Colorado. I’ve met with Matt in four different countries this year, and we’ve shared a memorable battle at the Chuckanut 50k in Bellingham WA, in March, where I finished first and he finished second, pushing me all the way to the finish to set a new course record. After a really good first half of the year, Matt struggled to find the right feelings during training and the races he ran reflected his physical and mental condition. In this episode the main theme is the unique connection between the hardships we face in life and those we experience on the trails. We also talk about his training and preparation for Javelina 100m, why he’s confident he can be successful at the 100m distance, how his track background has both helped and hindered his training as a trail runner, his experience with the Boulder Boys as athletes and content creators. _______________________ Follow @vert.run on IG Download our app and sign up to our training plans on vert.run You can send us a message with any questions for us or for our guests! https://anchor.fm/vertrun/message Francesco's links: Instagram | Twitter | Strava | Website…
