Jesus and Mary Magdalene were very close. One of the non canonical writings describes her as his companion or wife. I am not claiming this to be historically accurate. However it does point to how close they were known to have been.
The death of Jesus marked the death of the hopes and dreams of many of Jesus’s followers, none more so than Mary. They had expected him to set things right in their world. Mary very much enjoyed his company. And she’d never have that again.
For a moment, upon Jesus’s appearance to her, Mary, for a brief moment must have had the hope that what was could one day be again. But it could not be. That chapter was over. She had to let go.
Sometimes we all have to let go of our hopes, dreams and aspirations, of some friendships and relationships. Somethings can never be again… Look to the horizon. An ascension is coming and we won’t want to miss it.
