When you're using waterbased paints, a synthetic bristle brush is the way to go. But what's up with all the different types of bristles? I'm Dan Hansen and this is a minute at RepcoLite Paints sponsored by Benjamin Moore.
The main synthetic materials you'll see used in brushes are Chinex, Nylon, and polyester.
Chinex bristles offer good stiffness and they're designed for modern low-VOC paints. They release paint easily, which gives you smoother application, BUT, even more important to me: they clean up faster, too.
Nylon bristles are also durable, but they’re much softer. That can be great for a smooth finish, but if you’re doing detail work, this softness might make things tricky.
Polyester bristles are the stiffest of the bunch, but they don’t hold as much paint. So, you might find yourself dipping into the can more often.
Alright. Those are the three main synthetic filament types, but most of the time you'll see two or more of these combined to create brushes with different characteristics.
