- 1987 - Tiffany became the youngest act to score a U.S. No. 1 since Michael Jackson ("Ben", in 1972) with "I Think We're Alone Now". The song written by Ritchie Cordell was initially a 1967 hit for Tommy James & the Shondells. Fun fact: Tiffany hated the idea of recording a version of her own for her album because she thought the song wasn't modern or hip enough.

- 1961 - The Beach Boys release their first single, "Surfin'."
- 1994 - A&M Records releases Woodstock 1994, an album documenting the Woodstock '94 festival that took place in Saugerties, New York, three months earlier. The two-disc set includes live performances from 27 artists, including Joe Cocker ("Feelin' Alright"), The Cranberries ("Dreams"), Green Day ("When I Come Around") and Bob Dylan ("Highway 61 Revisited").

- 1958 - Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," exceeded sales of three million copies in the United States, becoming the first non-holiday single to sell that many. Until "Hound Dog," the only other singles to sell more than three million copies were Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer."
- 1999 - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announces the biggest-selling artists of the century in the United States: The Beatles have sold the most albums (106 million), Garth Brooks is the best-selling male solo act, and Barbra Streisand the best-selling female. Elton John's 1997 "Candle In The Wind" is the best-selling single of the century, and the best-selling album is the Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975.

- Birthdays: Marshall Crenshaw is 69.
