Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 68 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 12 March 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby union: The first thing that Osea Kolinisau did yesterday was bring sentimental fan favourite, Jerry Tuwai and veteran playmaker, Vatemo Ravouvou back into his squad.
What should be painfully obvious now, is that rugby 7s is a young man’s game.
Fiji always struggles when any two of Tuwai, Ravouvou or Nacuvu are on the field together, because of their lack of pace and weak D.
In football: Erling Haaland is on track for another Premier League golden boot but was all-but-invisible for Man City against Liverpool.
The star striker was exceptionally shut down by Virgil van Dijk and managed just 21 touches – fewer in his 90 minutes, than Mohamed Salah managed in half an hour off the bench for Liverpool.
In SportsBiz: During Super Bowl week, ESPN, Fox and Warner Brothers Discovery - three of the biggest media companies on the planet, announced a project befitting their size; a sports-streaming service one analyst called “the bundle we’ve been waiting for” and The Wall Street Journal described as a “milestone.”
However, other than the 06 February media release about the three-headed monster, code-named “Raptor” according to the WSJ, additional information has been scarce.
In rugby league: The Sydney Roosters are adamant that Spencer Leniu is not a racist, but it didn’t stop the NRL from sending a clear message last night, with the Samoan star suspended for eight games for calling Broncos young gun Ezra Mam a “monkey” during the game in Las Vegas last weekend.
Meanwhile, we know it’s only been one round, but at least we now have some tangible evidence about what every NRL side could deliver in 2024.
The Storm are back in title contention after their shutout of the reigning NRL premiers the Panthers.
The Eels look set to surge back into the Top 8 after their impressive display against the Bulldogs.
But there is no room for the Rabbitohs come finals time as some bad habits from 2023 returned against Manly.
In Combat sports: The WWE will induct Muhammad Ali into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
Their media release reads: “One of the most iconic figures in sports history, the three-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Olympic gold medalist was known around the world for his charisma, his confidence and his ability to back it up inside the ropes.
“Known simply as “The Greatest”, Ali’s influence transcended sports as his work as an activist, artist and personality established him as one of the most renowned figures in the entire world.
“Although best known as a boxer, Ali made a great impact in the entire world.
“On 26 June 1976, Ali competed in “The War of the Worlds” which was an exhibition match against WWE Hall of Famer Antonio Inoki inside the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo, Japan.
“The match, which was competed under specific rules, resulted in a 15-round draw in front of 32,000 fans in the crowd. The bout was also broadcast on closed-circuit television to nearly 33,000 fans inside Shea Stadium in Queens, New York.
“The event was a huge success and brought in countless new fans to the industry, while also being viewed as a precursor to modern mixed martial arts.
Both Ali and Inoki became friends after the event with Inoki even using Ali’s theme music and catchphrase as his own.
“After retiring from the boxing ring with a career record of 56-5 with 37 knockouts, Ali returned to the squared circle where he served as the special guest referee for the inaugural WrestleMania in 1984 during the main event between Hulk Hogan & Mr. T and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper & “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff.
“Ali’s defining moment in the match came when he punched Piper with his signature right hand – a move that restored order to the bout.
“Muhammad Ali sadly passed away on 03 June 2016 at 74, but his legacy as one of the greatest athletes persists, and his work to modernize and globalize professional wrestling helped seamlessly blend the world of sports and entertainment.”
Finally, only in America: Back in December, The Athletic published a report on Amit Patel, a former Jaguars employee accused of embezzling more than US$22Million from the NFL team, using a virtual credit card program from 2018 to 2023 in various financial planning roles.
Federal prosecutors allege that Patel used the embezzled funds to finance a luxurious lifestyle which included:
· Cryptocurrency: US$2,100,000
· Gifts to individuals: US$1,000,000
· Entertainment: US$300,000
· Legal fees: US$275,000
· Golf: US$201,000
· eBay: US$140,000
· Private Jets: US$78,800
· Tesla: US$50,000
· Hotels: US$118,000
· BestBet: US$34,000
· Airline travel: US$30,000
· Restaurants/bars: US$25,000
Patel faces a potential 30-year prison sentence. His attorney claimed that Patel had a gambling addiction.
And that’s a wrap!
