Ikon Gallery, first opened in 1964, was founded on the basis of challenging a conservative local art world. “Ikon is intended as an antithesis to exclusive art establishments and galleries … [it] has been formed because of the need for an accessible place where the exchange of visual ideas can become a familiar reality.” One of their current exhibitions, Hew Locke: Foreign Exchange, is presented by Birmingham 2022 Festival. It is a reimagining of the Queen Victoria statue found in Victoria Square.
This week, Dave Massey talks to exhibition curator Melanie Pocock in Victoria Square. She discusses the Foreign Exchange exhibition and the meanings and messages embedded in the work. She also discusses her experience in being involved in such a big project.
