STORY 1: Woodstock Mayor Shares Parking Deck Update. What We Know
Downtown Woodstock's new parking deck is set to open in early 2025, according to Mayor Michael Caldwell. The six-level deck, which will provide 633 free parking spaces, is expected to be topped off by September 16 and completed by the end of December. It is part of the larger Woodstock City Center project, which will feature office spaces, retail, restaurants, and a boutique hotel. Caldwell emphasized that the parking will be free, addressing community concerns about costs. Winter Construction is handling the public infrastructure, including the parking deck.
STORY 2: Superintendent: Cherokee School Board to Unveil Core Beliefs and Goals
Cherokee County Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis announced that the school board will unveil core beliefs and new reading and English language arts goals at the Sept. 12 meeting. These goals are part of a broader plan to elevate the district's performance, aiming to become the highest-performing district in Georgia. Davis highlighted a recent achievement where 70.3% of third graders were reading at or above grade level, though she noted room for improvement compared to other districts. The new Cherokee High School campus construction is on track and under budget. Additionally, the district has implemented a stricter cell phone policy to foster personal interaction among students.
STORY 3: Cherokee County Approves Highway 20 East Overlay Standards
Cherokee County officials have introduced the Highway 20 East Overlay District to set design and architectural standards for new development along Highway 20 from Canton Marketplace to the Forsyth County line. This overlay aims to ensure that as the highway expands, development remains aesthetically pleasing and avoids a cluttered commercial appearance. The district, which covers a mix of residential and commercial land, includes requirements for landscaping, open space, pedestrian access, and architectural features. The goal is to preserve community character while accommodating growth. The overlay will apply to new developments and major changes in the area, with standards for building materials, height, and design.

STORY 4: Habitat for Humanity Holds ‘First Nail Ceremony’ for Canton Home
Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia recently celebrated the start of a new home build in Canton with a “first nail ceremony.” The project, known as a Habitat Women Build, is funded largely by women volunteers and supported by corporate sponsor EIS, which contributed $80,000 and volunteers. Homebuyer Jada Parks, who learned about Habitat from a cousin, expressed her gratitude and hopes to give back to her community. This build is part of a larger initiative to construct three new homes in Canton. Volunteers wrote messages of encouragement on the home’s walls, symbolizing community support and hope.
STORY 5: Cherokee Follows Record-Breaking Performance with Lambert
Cherokee’s Week 4 opponent, Lambert, presents a tough challenge despite their 0-2 record. The Longhorns have faced top teams Mill Creek and Walton, with Walton being a recent Class 7A runner-up and Mill Creek the 2022 state champion. Cherokee coach Adam Holley warns that Lambert’s record is misleading and the game will be a tough test. The Warriors, coming off a record-setting 65-42 win over Pope, are led by quarterback Tanner Savasir, who’s had a standout season. With high offensive production and a strong core of experienced players, Cherokee is poised for a competitive game against Lambert before starting their region play.
