Title: Heretic
Year: 2024
Directors: Scott Beck and Bryan Woods
Writers: Scott Beck and Bryan Woods
Top Billed Stars: Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East
Running Time: 111 minutes
Country: United States
Release Date: November 8, 2024 (U.S.), November 1, 2024 (U.K.)
In Heretic, two young missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), knock on the door of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), a seemingly charming but ultimately sinister man. What begins as a routine effort to convert him to their faith quickly turns into a nightmarish game of cat and mouse. As the women struggle to escape, they are forced to confront their faith and survival instincts in Reed’s deadly house of horrors, which combines psychological manipulation and supernatural elements.
This psychological horror from A24 takes on the theme of belief and the horrors that can arise from questioning one’s faith. Hugh Grant takes on one of his darkest roles yet as the menacing Mr. Reed, marking a departure from his usual charming persona. The film blends supernatural terror with intense psychological drama, and it is shot in a single location to create an atmosphere of claustrophobia and dread. Heretic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2024.
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods: Known for writing A Quiet Place (2018) and directing 65 (2023).
Hugh Grant: Starred in Paddington 2 (2017) and The Gentlemen (2019), but his role in Heretic marks a new, darker chapter in his career.
Sophie Thatcher: Known for her breakout role in Yellowjackets (2021–2022) and The Boogeyman (2023).
Chloe East: Featured in Generation (2021) and The Fabelmans (2022).
