“Up and to the right”. I’ve always heard this phrase in a positive way. It wasn’t till recently a new meaning was brought to my attention.

Yeah. “Up and to the right” has always been good. The phrase is often used in business contexts to describe positive growth trends or performance indicators. Thats right. I invest a dollar and the market turns it into $2! Sign me up. That is the aim right. Good thing! This phrase has been the target.

Until… a new context was presented to me. And like most everything in life, now it depends. “Up and to the right” or "Going high and to the right" is an expression in the United States Marine Corps that means to lose one's temper or rationality. It comes from the common error of a poor shooter jerking the trigger and hitting the upper right side of a target. Pretty big difference huh!

Welcome to a new week. Let’s launch it with purpose and a positive growth-oriented mindset. I guess the alternative is an option if you choose. And I’d ask, why would you choose that? I mean given the option… do you want today and this week to be positive growth trend, or to be void of temper and rational? No matter what the last couple days have been, what we’ve experienced, we get the opportunity today to start fresh. Isn’t that a relief. Today is new. Let’s choose the positive “up and to the right” today.

Catherine Pulsifer says it this way… ”Every day is a chance to begin again. Don't focus on the failures of yesterday, start today with positive thoughts and expectations.”

Eminem puts it this way… "Whatever you love, you have to put your heart and soul into it and give it everything you've got.”

Today is worth it. Drop that beat in your head and put that on repeat. Throw all you’ve got at a positive growth trend today. This is our shot to breath… keep our rational… slowly pull the trigger and strike that bullseye.
