As Juneteenth approaches, I encourage you to join me in contemplating the deep significance of this day in American history and the enduring lessons it offers. Juneteenth marks not the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but rather the moment in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Texas to announce the end of slavery, liberating the last of the enslaved. This two-and-a-half-year gap between proclamation and actual freedom reminds us that real social progress is often gradual and requires persistent effort.
Juneteenth is a time for celebration. The newly freed individuals rejoiced with prayers, feasts, songs, and dances. However, this newfound freedom did not mark the end of the hardships imposed by slavery. For the past 159 years, Black and Brown Americans have continued to struggle for genuine equality, making incremental progress along the way.
