Former Hollywood star Kevin Spacey (64) will not be able to celebrate the world premiere of his latest film "Control" as originally planned at the London "Prince Charles Cinema." According to a media report, the cinema's manager initially did not realize that it was a production featuring Spacey. This was reported by the British newspaper "Telegraph."
Here's the problem: "We have a problem," the cinema's manager informed Spacey's fellow actress Lauren Metcalfe (68), who is also a producer on "Control," via email. The cinema has canceled the booking for the November premiere.
The reason given was: "Last night, we learned that Kevin Spacey is in your film, and it's notably his first film since the legal proceedings. My staff and I are appalled that we would be mentioned in the same breath as his new film for the premiere." The cinema operator did not further comment on a request from the "Telegraph."
According to the report, Spacey's US lawyer Chase Scolnick described the unexpected cancellation by the cinema as "more than disappointing" and accused the "Prince Charles Cinema" in London of censorship. Metcalfe called the rejection "very shocking." Gene Fallaize, the director of the film, was quoted as saying, "It's outrageous. Everything was arranged." He recently announced on Instagram that, for various reasons, the premiere would now take place at the larger "Genesis Cinema." He stated that there was "an overwhelming demand for tickets," allowing them to accommodate more people. There was no mention of the cancellation by the other cinema.
Cancellation despite Kevin Spacey's acquittal
The trial mentioned by the cinema took place in London and began at the end of June. The actor, who was dropped by Hollywood during the MeToo movement, was accused of indecently assaulting or compelling sexual activity with four men in the UK between 2001 and 2013. Spacey denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all charges. On his 64th birthday, at the end of July, he was ultimately acquitted on all counts in London.
Spacey had already been acquitted in the United States in 2022. A New York jury found him not guilty. His fellow actor, Anthony Rapp (51), accused him of sexually harassing him when Rapp was only 14 years old.
