In 2018, UK universities spent over £210 million on publication costs (access etc). This could have paid for; 700 ECR fellowships or 6500 postdocs or >8500 technicians or 3,500 PhDs (4yr fees + stipend). Meanwhile, Elsevier had profit margins of 37%.
