This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas take a trip to Thailand, only to be given a mysterious map to a mythical beach, on an island unspoiled by tourists. They decide to take on this adventure, and arrive to the beach to find a group of international travellers and hippies living out their best Lord of the Flies scenario.

It is the final week of 2 THOUGHTS 2 DEEP TOO : TOKYO DRIFT, and we have arrived at the apex of the arc, hitting all the themes of deep ass movies about people who think they are so smart because they took a gap year and pretended like they invented the idea of getting away from civilisation (all set to the tune of Moby's Porcelain), with Danny Boyle's 2000 flick, THE BEACH, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, based on the novel by Alex Garland.

It's post-Titanic, and Leo is looking for his big follow-up. Should he do a romance? Should he do a drama? Should he do an adventure film? Should he do a thriller? Or should he do a weird mash-up of all these genres, under the direction of the guy who brought us Trainspotting? That one!

Did Leo earn his $20 million pay cheque, and live up to the expectations of his teenaged fans, or did he sink into the abyss like Jack when Rose let go? Or maybe, he just enjoyed his own little gap year before he returned to form with a prestigious career, seeing him work with the likes of Spielberg, Scorsese, Scott, Mendes and Tarantino, and earning 3 Golden Globes, 1 BAFTA and 1 Oscar in the process...

“The only downer is, everyone's got the same idea. We all travel thousands of miles just to watch TV and check in to somewhere with all the comforts of home, and you gotta ask yourself, what is the point of that?”
