*More About This Episode* Hollywood and the Bible: Love or Hate Relationship?

*Correction to this episode concerning the Hays Code: The Catholics launched the Legion of Decency. The Protestants brought in Willian Hays, the US Postmaster General and Presbyterian elder to watch over the Hays’ Code.

In the early days of cinema, churches made more movies than Hollywood. Here’s 4 reasons Hollywood has always been engaged with the Bible:

1. The power of the Bible stories.

2. Audience awareness. There’s a shorthand with the audience when drawing from Christian bestsellers (with the Bible being number one).

3. Bible stories transcend culture.

4. Christian audience size. Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” helped prove how huge of an audience there is who take their faith seriously.

Tips for Aspiring Filmmakers (or those who want to make an impact in today’s media-driven culture)

1. Listen to the voices of pop culture. Don’t live in a bubble.

2. Recognize the opportunity. There are so many ways to step into the creative space as a Christian in Hollywood.

3. Be real. This generation wants authenticity.

4. Engage with today’s culture, even when it’s uncomfortable.

5. Be a patron. Support those in the film industry and get involved.
