1 John 1:1-4
Before we read this, let’s jump in with “we” are the apostles, eyewitnesses, and disciples…perhaps just a few were left on Earth, but mainly John is saying, look…this gnosticism is crap... I WAS THERE, WE WERE THERE…And we are telling you there is JOY in this. Back then personal testimony held huge weight so he is starting out strong and establishing his authority to be heard.
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes (recognized), which we have looked at (observed His glory) and our hands have touched —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. (2) The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. (3) We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. (4) We write this to make our joy complete.” This is God’s word!
Woven into this letter are three main points:
- True teaching (true understanding) Do you get it?
- True living (we obey God’s commands) Do you obey it?
- True loving (we love others because we are loved by God, and God is love) Do you prove it?
