Shafia Monroe is a legendary midwife of more than 36 years, a wife, mother of 7, author, President of Doula Ready, LLC, Shafia Monroe Consulting, and founder of ICTC (International Center for Traditional Childbearing), now NAABB (National Association to Advance Black Birth). Ms. Shafia has been a midwife since 1978, walking alongside thousands of families, as an expert in serving diverse populations in maternal child health. In this episode Ms. Shafia shares her journey to becoming a midwife and creating ICTC. We begin by exploring her introduction to birth at 16 years old, then move into the inception story of The Traditional Childbearing group located in Roxbury, Massachusetts, which she started with Majeeda Amadadeen (Workneh), eventually journeying across the U.S. to Portland, and ending with her current work at Shafia Monroe Consulting.
