A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO!

Well, it’s a Friday morning, and it’s the 22nd day of October.

So, do you know what today is? It’s National NUT Day!! And I’m SO excited! It looks like I finally got my OWN National Day of Recognition!! What? What? NO... so your saying it’s not THAT kind of nut? Oh, you’re saying it’s the kind you eat? Here, give me that... Okay, it says here, “Nuts are a highly prized food and energy source and some are a primary source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife. Many nuts are excellent sources of vitamins E and B2.

They are also rich in protein, fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium.” Hmmm.

So, Happy National Nut Day to you!

Even though it isn’t about me...

Well, the upcoming story doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with nuts, but it is another story involving MY favorite teacher, Mr. Delaney. Mr. Delaney always talked a LOT with his class about becoming HEROES by HELPING others, you know, instead of hurting others.

And in this story, he talks about the IMPORTANCE of HELPING. So, here we go! The story is called The End of the Year Discussion, and it starts right now.

****

The End of the Year Discussion

Toward the end of every school year, after all the testing is done, Mr. Delaney likes having discussions with his class. And of course, one of his favorite subjects is that of HELPING others instead of hurting them. “Why should we all be HELPERS,” he asked his class. One girl said, “It makes the world a better place.”

Another student said, “It makes life easier for someone having a hard time.” Someone else said, “It makes everybody friendlier.”

But there was a new kid in the class who had just moved from another city. He spent a lot of his time picking on other kids. He said, “Life is not always JUST about HELPING, you know.”

“Really” said Mr. Delaney, “Then what is it all about?” The boy thought—for longer than just a moment and finally said proudly, “It’s about having fun!” Mr. Delaney started to comment, but then a boy named Bryan, raised his hand. “I think I can handle this one,” he said, and Mr. Delaney nodded. Bryan said, “But just as soon as the fun is gone, all you have left is the memory of having fun, and if your fun was causing someone else to be hurt, what good does that do? When you HELP other people, though, then the person HELPING creates a good memory and provides a good memory for the person being HELPED. It really is all about HELPING.”

Then Mr. Delaney added, “And you can certainly have fun while you’re HELPING, too, making a good memory for everyone.” The boy hadn’t really thought about it like that before, but he was beginning to see that choosing to HELP others was a lot better than choosing to hurt them. He was pretty much deciding right then to start becoming a HERO instead.

****

The End of the Year Discussion

So, how would YOU have answered Mr. Delaney’s question, “Why should we all be helpers?” Or his question, “Why does HELPING others make the world a better place?” Also, what do you think the world would be like if we all thought life was only about having fun? Having fun for who? And at whose expense? Just a few things to think about on this Thursday morning...

Okay, just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future, right here on the Friday edition of TCN Mornings.

***

Well now, here’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for! My Old Irish Pappy. But before we get into today’s pappyism, since this is Friday, let’s review what he taught us Monday through Thursday...and here we go!

MONDAY

As you go along in life, set standards for yourself. And when you master those standards, set some HIGHER standards!

TUESDAY

ALWAYS pay what you owe! And if you can’t, ALWAYS communicate about it and make arrangements to pay. And then KEEP the arrangements you made.

ALWAYS...no exceptions!

WEDNESDAY

Don’t be a complainer! If you truly have a complaint, take it to the person who can actually do something about it. Don’t just gripe to your friends (or anybody else who will listen to you). When you do that, it’s just a bunch of gossip. And nothing good ever comes from gossiping!

THURSDAY

Look ahead to when you’re an adult. Do you want to be trusted and respected? If you want people to trust you, you’ve gotta be trustworthy. If you want people to respect you, you’ve got to be respectable! And remember that TRUST, once lost, is VERY hard to get back!

And now, let’s see what words of wisdom we can learn today from My Old Irish Pappy:

OH yeah! Learn about “Servant Leadership” and then you need to practice it! You know, when you see someone who is a “Servant Leader,” it is really a wonderful thing. We hear a lot about leadership, and how to become a leader...and some people are just natural leaders. But most people in one way or another can learn to be an effective leader. Leading by example is the most respectable form of leadership, but when you add SERVING those you are leading to the mix, it’s a pretty amazing thing. So learn about “Servant Leadership,” and then practice it!

****

Alright, so here we go on this Friday morning with the QUESTION OF THE DAY!

In keeping with Today’s National Nut Day, What 5 kinds of nuts are considered the healthiest because of the nutrients they offer? What 5 kinds of nuts are considered the healthiest because of the nutrients they offer?

If you know the answer, email your answer to MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com.

Tell us your first name, your city and state, and of course, your answer, and the first correct answer will be featured right here on Monday. That email address again is MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com.

Now, about yesterday’s question: Yesterday was National Get Smart About Credit Day, and we talked a lot about that. But your question was:

What is INTEREST, and why is it import to qualify for the lowest interest rate you possible can?

Well, Isabella from Alliance, Ohio says that when you borrow money from a bank or a credit card company or wherever, they are actually SELLING you that money. When you pay it back, you have to pay back more than you borrow. That extra amount is called interest. If you always pay back money that you borrow in the way and in the time that you agreed to, the people who lend money will have more trust in you. When you show that you can be trusted to pay back the money you borrow in the time that you agreed to, you can qualify for a lower interest rate. That means there won’t me so much extra money that you have to pay in addition to the original money that you borrow. If you become known for paying late, and missing payments, then you have to pay more interest to even be able to borrow money.

Sometimes a LOT more. So it is important to keep a good credit rating by paying all bills on time in order to have a lower interest rate when you need it!

And, wow! What a complete and accurate answer, Isabella! Thank you SO much!

****

Okay, just one more quick segment ahead for you, but as for ME, Jim Lord, I will see you the first thing next week for the MONDAY edition of TCN Mornings here on The Character Network..

Reflection:

Closer.

Dear Parents,

After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials

This program, The Beginning of a Famous Herois used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment.

These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it’s just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.”

They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help relate consequences of actions and attitudes today (good or bad) to that future self.

It is the spaced repetition of these principles that makes the program effective. It is the 100% turn-key presentation that makes it easy!

This program takes VIRTUALLY NO TIME (only 4 minutes a week!) away from classroom instruction. But it also provides a common language across the entire campus when teachable moments occur!

The TCN Method has been extraordinarily successful in the past, in almost a thousand schools all across America, from California to New York, with a special concentration all over Texas, where The Character Network is based, and has been used to the benefit of well over a million students across the past two decades.

Then Covid struck, with the majority of schools ceasing in classroom instruction altogether for the majority of the previous school year, and after years of successful growth, we found ourselves in the very difficult situation of having to rebuild almost from scratch. So we started a morning podcast to help make the principles and teachings of TCN available to kids to have at home… but we need help from parents like you to get the word out, and also to help us gather financial support to once again make the method available again to not just the schools we lost due to Covid, but to every school and every child who could benefit and needs this going forward.

We invite you to become a coworker with us on our mission. Please start by visiting us at www.Patreon.com/theCharacterNetwork and considering becoming a sponsor for this work, and then dropping us a line at info@thecharacternetwork.org so we can learn more about you. Thank you so much!
