#037: Building Psychologically Safe Workplaces with Michele Thomson
Manage episode 386991764 series 3440800
My guest today is Michele Thomson. Michele is a registered nurse turned leadership development coach and consultant who has worked in healthcare for more than 25 years before becoming an entrepreneur. Michele helps organizations avoid crisis leadership and transforms workplaces using the basis of psychological safety.
She helps leaders shift from feeling burned out and frustrated to aligned and authentic so they can enjoy their work again and be the leader they wish they had, the leader everyone needs and the leader they know they can become.
After experiencing the traumatic effects of a dysfunctional work environment, Michele developed her own leadership approach which she has incorporated into an 8-week online leadership program. She believes that leadership has become more complicated than it needs to be.
Michele is a daughter, wife, step-mom, dog mama and lover of all things lemon. She currently resides in Vancouver, BC Canada.
Here are the takeaways from this episode:
1. A psychologically safe workplace means you can show up as your authentic self without fear of retribution or having to question your own morals and values, showing up as all parts of yourself. And, even on the days when you are only able to show up as 75% you are still valued for your contribution.
2. The book and author that I mentioned from the Culture First podcast is Susan David and her book is Emotional Agility, which reached #1 on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list in 2016. Highly recommended.
3. Core Values are the things that we all agree are going to be the playing field for how we’re going to show up for each other.
4. Communication is powerful. How we set the stage for safe conversations in the workplace is critical.
5. Soft skills are not weak.
6. A leading cause of burnout is a mismatch between an employee and an organization’s values. Organizations should integrate their values and individuals should be aware of their personal core values to ensure there’s not an underlying mismatch.
7. 6 Approaches to shift your relationships regardless of what your role is at work or at home.
1. Be visible. In order to be trusted you need to be seen.
2. Approach situations with curiosity and humility. Ask deeper questions.
3. Approach all situations with a growth mindset.
4. Words matter. Avoid using, “but”, “should” and “try”.
5. Try to do at least one kind thing a day.
6. Stop playing the “if only” game. Just take action!
