Following the controversy surrounding Arianism, a number of new heresies sprang up around the place. One of them was Nestorianism, which would precipitate the Council of Ephesus and would then be one of the several heresies addressed at the Council of Chalcedon. Nestorius struggled to reconcile the claim that the two natures of Christ’s divinity and humanity could be united in the single person of Jesus. His alternative was ultimately declared heretical.
