Love Wins by Rob Bell - Written by an ex-emergent pastor. A fast read with both academic and pop sensibilities. This book had a big impact on both Rob and Stefan.
Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright - N.T. Wright works to reclaim Jesus teachings and early orthodox Christians views of afterlife. Spoiler alert, there is no heaven/hell as it's commonly taught.
Also check out Richard Rohr (Fr. Priest) and Bart Ehrman (Atheist) for historical biblical understandings around afterlife.
Yale Intro to the New Testament -This is a big time investment but will really help you understand the bible from a historical perspective and will help contextualize any afterlife references in a much bigger story.
