Ep.17 "Keys 2 the City" PT. I
Manage episode 317179486 series 3266947
For our two-part season finale we revisited Nipsey Hussle's "The Marathon" released 10 years ago this week. Nipsey Hussle was still in the process of leaving Epic Records following the release of Hussle In The House in 2008 from what was suppose to be his label debut "South Central State of Mind". This mixtape was released during the emergence of the blog era, as more artists began to interact directly with fans as the need for a major label began to wane. Including a mixture of original songs and "freestyles", The Marathon began to show the Nipsey Hussle that would become a budding Hip Hop Icon. With his charismatic energy, vivid storytelling, and an ear for beats all would love, The Marathon solidified Nipsey Hussle's place among his peers. After working with Drake, Snoop, and Game and the pressure of being named a 2010 XXL freshman, Nipsey had to deliver, and at the end of 2010, The Marathon began.
We also talked about the 2010 being the best XXL freshman list, Nipsey not having co-sign from Dre and not adopting the historical "LA" sound, How the blog era and Datpiff changed hip hop and a lot more++
