In the early 1840s, a Belgian called Adolphe Sax invented a new musical instrument and decided to name it after himself. Ignoring the opportunity to go with the ‘Adolphophone’ our hero decided he would use his surname instead and thus the saxophone was born. By the way, this was not the only example of Adolphe’s self-reverential instrument naming. He also invented the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba.
Nearly 200 years later, Adolphe’s work lives on in our area. The Sax Bandits are an all-saxophone band for all ages and abilities – even beginners – with sessions in Charvil Village Hall and a choice of other locations in surrounding areas. They meet once a month, playing arrangements of rock and pop songs; from Madness to George Ezra to Earth Wind & Fire. As their website saxbandits.co.uk says “Learn to play songs together in a relaxed and supportive environment. You can expect to see an assorted collection of saxophones, people, biscuits, and wrong notes!”
The Sax Bandits also perform a few gigs each year, usually a summer festival and a Christmas event. For example, On Monday 18th December they will be playing Henley Market Square as part of the Henley Living Advent Calendar.
In this episode of the RG10 Podcast you will hear from Sax Bandits founder Rob Digweed, AKA ‘The Sorcerer of Sax’.
