Judge Halts Karen Read Pretrial Hearing After ‘Grave Concern’ Over New Information A pretrial hearing in the Karen Read case took an unexpected turn when Judge Beverly Cannone abruptly ended proceedings, citing "grave concern" over newly disclosed information that could have "profound effects" on the defense. The dramatic moment unfolded after an open court discussion regarding federal involvement in the case, including expert witnesses from ARCCA, a forensic firm specializing in accident reconstruction. “The Commonwealth just provided the court with information that causes me grave concern,” Cannone announced after returning from an unplanned recess. “The implications of that information may have profound effects on the defense and defense counsel.” Cannone then suspended the hearing, stating that when proceedings resume, all affected parties should be "appropriately prepared" to address the issues at hand. The abrupt decision followed a statement by special prosecutor Hank Brennan, who disclosed in open court that Read’s defense team had previously communicated with ARCCA experts before her first trial. Brennan referred to what appeared to be emails between the defense and ARCCA, along with a $23,000 invoice the firm allegedly sent to Read’s legal team. Brennan, who recently filed a motion to bar ARCCA witnesses from testifying at Read’s retrial, accused the defense of concealing critical information about the experts' involvement. “Both Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Rentschler admittedly did not review all pertinent and relevant evidence that exists in this case,” Brennan’s motion stated, referring to ARCCA’s accident reconstruction specialists who testified in Read’s defense in June 2024. Tuesday’s pretrial hearing was the first since the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court denied Read’s appeal to dismiss two of the three charges against her. Read is accused of striking her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, with her Lexus SUV in January 2022 and leaving him to die outside in a snowstorm after a night of drinking. Her original trial ended in a hung jury, leading Cannone to declare a mistrial in July 2024. Read, who has consistently maintained her innocence, claims that she was framed and that O’Keefe was actually killed inside the home of Brian Albert before being dragged outside. In an exclusive interview with Boston 25’s Ted Daniel on Super Bowl Sunday, Read reiterated her stance, stating, “I have nothing to hide. I’ve been framed.” Her retrial, originally scheduled for early 2025, has now been pushed to April. The latest developments raise new questions about the role of federal forensic experts in the case and how their testimony might impact the outcome of the upcoming trial. #KarenRead #JusticeForKarenRead #BostonPD #LegalNews #TrueCrime #CourtroomDrama #BreakingNews Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Was it really a dog bite, or is that just another wild theory being thrown into the chaos? The Karen Read case is shaping up to be a legal rollercoaster, and with a retrial set for April 2025, the twists just keep coming. Former prosecutor and defense attorney Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to dissect the latest developments—motions to eliminate charges, allegations of investigative misconduct, and the unusual legal question of whether a jury's intent can be reconsidered after the fact. Plus, we dive into one of the most bizarre aspects of the case: the claim that a dog played a role in John O'Keefe’s death. If that’s true, why hasn’t anyone tested the dog properly? And if it’s not, what really happened? #KarenRead #TrueCrime #LegalDrama #DogBiteDefense #JusticeForJohn #CourtroomChaos #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Was Karen Read really the one behind the wheel that night, or is there more to this case than meets the eye? The twists and turns of this legal rollercoaster keep coming, with new motions, shifting charges, and mounting allegations of investigative misconduct. As the retrial date looms in April 2025, defense attorneys are pushing to dismiss key charges, claiming the jury was more confused than decisive. Former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to break down the chaos. Could a judge actually dismiss charges based on what the jury meant to say but didn’t? What about the new "dog bite" theory—was John O’Keefe attacked by a K9, or is that just a last-ditch defense play? And if another mistrial happens, how long can this case drag on before someone finally throws in the towel? #KarenReadCase #TrueCrime #LegalDrama #JuryConfusion #MistrialMadness #DefenseStrategy #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Did the defense just cook up a whole new recipe for reasonable doubt? When it comes to the Karen Read case, one of the biggest battles isn’t about witness testimony or forensic evidence—it’s about cold, hard data. Specifically, the kind of data that comes straight from the company that provides it. Yet somehow, that’s still up for debate in court. In this episode, Tony Brueski and former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis break down how cell phone records—something that should be as clear as reading a clock—have become a point of confusion, misinterpretation, and possibly even manipulation. When the company behind the data says, “Here’s exactly what it means,” but the defense says, “Nah, we’ll go with our own version,” what happens to the truth? And more importantly, what happens when jurors can’t tell the difference between facts and smoke and mirrors? If the strongest legal strategy is just throwing enough confusion at the wall to see what sticks, what does that say about the case itself? #TrueCrime #KarenRead #LegalStrategy #ReasonableDoubt #CellPhoneData #CourtroomDrama #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In today's motions hearing for the Karen Read case, the court addressed several key issues ahead of her retrial scheduled for April. A significant development was Judge Beverly Cannone's decision to allow testimony from defense expert Richard Green. Green's analysis challenges the prosecution's timeline, suggesting that a Google search for "how long to die in the cold" was conducted at approximately 2:30 a.m., earlier than the prosecution's claim of 6:23 a.m. This discrepancy could be pivotal in establishing the sequence of events leading to the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. Additionally, the hearing focused on missing video footage from the Canton Police Department, which the defense argues is crucial evidence. The absence of this footage has raised questions about potential evidence mishandling or suppression. The court also addressed various pre-trial motions, including discussions about expert testimonies and evidentiary matters, as both sides prepare for the upcoming trial. These developments underscore the complexities of the case as it moves toward retrial. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Judge Declines Special Hearing on Karen Read Defense Expert as Battle Over Witness Testimony Continues As Karen Read’s highly anticipated murder retrial approaches, a judge ruled Friday that there is no need for a special hearing to determine whether defense-hired cell phone expert Richard Green can testify. Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone made the decision after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense, setting the stage for a critical ruling on Green’s role in the case. Read, 44, is accused of striking her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in a snowbank on January 29, 2022, after a night of drinking. She has pleaded not guilty, claiming she is the victim of a law-enforcement cover-up and that O’Keefe was fatally beaten inside a nearby Canton home before his body was left outside. Prosecutors had pushed for a hearing to examine Green’s credentials and methodology, with special prosecutor Hank Brennan arguing that Green’s claims were unreliable and “lack any evidentiary support.” Defense attorney Robert Alessi pushed back, arguing that Green is qualified and used five forensic tools to reach his conclusions. Karen read-Defense attorney Robert Alessi.MP4 With Read’s retrial set to begin in April, the case is once again drawing national attention. Just weeks before the retrial, Investigation Discovery will air A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read , a three-night docuseries offering “unprecedented access” to Read, her legal team, and key figures in the case. The series, which will delve into the investigation and trial proceedings, will premiere on March 17 and 18 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., with a one-hour finale on March 19 at 9 p.m. It will also be available to stream on Max. With tensions high and the battle over forensic evidence heating up, Read is set to return to court on April 1 as both sides prepare for a fierce legal showdown. While Cannone ruled that a special hearing was unnecessary, she has not yet decided whether Green’s testimony will be allowed at trial. Green, a digital forensics expert, previously testified that Jennifer McCabe—who was with Read the night of O’Keefe’s death—googled “hos long to die in cold” around 2:30 a.m. The prosecution has maintained that McCabe only made the search hours later, at Read’s request, after O’Keefe’s body was discovered. Green also stated that McCabe had deleted call records, a claim that could prove crucial to Read’s third-party culprit defense. The prosecution also sought to block another defense expert, Dr. Marie Russell, from testifying, but Cannone rejected that effort after two lengthy hearings. Russell has testified that wounds found on O’Keefe’s arm were consistent with dog bites, contradicting the prosecution’s claim that he was struck by Read’s vehicle. The legal wrangling over expert witnesses is far from over. On Thursday, Cannone is expected to hear arguments on whether two FBI and DOJ accident reconstructionists, Andrew Rentschler and Daniel Wolfe, can testify in Read’s retrial. Rentschler previously testified that O’Keefe’s injuries were not consistent with being hit by a car, a key claim that challenges the state’s case against Read. Prosecutor Brennan has argued that Read’s defense team will not be able to meet discovery obligations under Rule 14, citing the “history and complexity” of the experts’ employment. The outcome of Thursday’s hearing could have significant implications for the retrial, as the defense continues to challenge the prosecution’s forensic evidence and investigative methods. Adding to the heightened public interest, Investigation Discovery is set to premiere A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read , a three-night docuseries offering behind-the-scenes access to Read, her attorneys, and key figures in the case. The series will air March 17 and 18 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., with a one-hour finale on March 19 at 9 p.m. It will also be available for streaming on Max. As Read’s retrial approaches on April 1, both sides are locked in an intense battle over evidence, expert testimony, and competing narratives about what really happened the night O’Keefe died. #KarenRead #JusticeForKarenRead #JohnOkeefe #TrueCrime #IDNetwork #CourtroomDrama #MurderTria Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The murder retrial of Karen Read is already heating up, with prosecutors aggressively challenging a defense expert’s ability to testify. Read, who is accused of second-degree murder in the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, appeared in court as both sides clashed over crucial evidence. Prosecutors took aim at one of the defense’s forensic experts, arguing that their conclusions were “forensically and scientifically unsound.” They are pushing to exclude the expert from testifying in Read’s upcoming retrial, a move that could significantly impact the defense’s case. Read, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of striking O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him to die in a snowstorm outside a Canton, Massachusetts, home. The defense has maintained that she is being framed and that the investigation into O’Keefe’s death was flawed. The prosecution insists that the forensic evidence supports their claim that Read intentionally struck O’Keefe with her vehicle after a night of drinking. However, the defense argues that O’Keefe’s injuries are not consistent with being hit by a car and that key evidence points to another cause of death. The case has garnered national attention, with Read’s supporters questioning law enforcement’s handling of the investigation. The defense has accused police of protecting certain individuals and failing to properly follow up on alternate theories. With the retrial looming, both sides are preparing for an intense legal showdown. The prosecution’s fight to exclude the defense expert signals how crucial forensic evidence will be in determining Read’s fate. #KarenRead #JusticeForKarenRead #JohnOkeefe #TrueCrime #BostonNews #LegalDrama #CourtroomShowdown Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
