James Madison firmly believed that America would not survive without a Constitution, as no other nation had one. So why was America so different? He famously argued that “Whenever there is an interest and power to do wrong, wrong will generally be done.” In other words, James Madison knew that if America wanted to prevent and limit corruption, a Constitution was essential for achieving this. James Madison believed this so strongly he was willing to dive into the muddy waters of politics by writing and advancing his ideas - ultimately becoming one of the most influential figures of his era. He recognized the potential danger of unchecked government power, having lived through the various European governments he witnessed on his travels. It’s clear James Madison knew just how devastating these governments could be, so he fought passionately for a document that would protect citizens and keep the government in check.
