On Friday night, former President Donald J. Trump asserted that American presidents should enjoy complete immunity from prosecution, even for actions that may "cross the line." This marked the second instance this week where he emphasized the belief that the occupant of the nation's highest office should effectively be shielded from the reach of criminal law.

Trump conveyed these sentiments on his social media platform, Truth Social, underscoring his perspective that the presidency should be exempt from the usual constraints of the criminal justice system. These remarks were strategically made as Trump aimed to strengthen his leading position in the race for the Republican nomination, seeking a decisive victory in the upcoming New Hampshire primary.

It's noteworthy that Trump's statements appeared to surpass the legal arguments put forth by one of his lawyers. The legal team had previously attempted to leverage broad claims of executive immunity to dismiss a federal indictment against Trump, accusing him of conspiring to unlawfully overturn the 2020 election results.
