In this episode of Transfer Nation Talks, we speak with Dr. Neil Nicholson, a North Central College associate professor of mathematics and a Cardinal First mentor, about his experience with the program and key takeaways about engaging with first-generation transfer students.
A campus-wide, cohort-based program, Cardinal First supports first-generation students from enrollment to graduation. The mission of Cardinal First is to “provide a supportive and welcoming community for first-generation college students and their families, a campus culture that recognizes and celebrates first-generation student identity as an asset, and a program that intentionally connects first-generation students to faculty, resources, information and experiences that promote academic and personal success.”
This episode is part three of a three-part series focused on the Cardinal First program. In the first episode, found here, we sat down with Julie Carbarro, Director of first-gen and transfer initiatives at North Central College, to learn more about the structure and specifics of the program. The second episode, found here, featured an interview with Daniela Chabez, a first-gen transfer and Cardinal First graduate.
