David's mighty men were adept at using a large shield and spear. They were trained on using their weapons. In the New Testament, Paul tells us that as part of our spiritual armor, we have a shield, the shield of faith with which each of us can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. See 1 Chronicles 12:8.
