THIS WAS A POWERFUL EPISODE. Two weeks ago I had a video call with Alex Costa, where we discussed mental health, his drive to never give up, dealing with grief and his work ethic. It's funny, I was first connected to Alex through Antonio Centeno (of Real Men Real Style) who let me know Alex was in London. We were trying to arrange to meet up, then randomly bumped into each other at the YouTube space in London. We discussed my switch to mental health, and Alex shared a personal story about his auntie... Alex also then shared the idea for this series, which is why it was. a real honour to have him on as a guest! We spoke about: - When he started YouTube and why. - His decision to move from gaming videos in Portuguese to men's lifestyle videos in English. - The times he felt like giving up, when results weren't coming. - His own personal experience with suicide, losing his Auntie and how that shaped his life. - His thoughts on mental health, and the importance of talking. - As an influencer, how much does he work? - Future plans for Alex and his channel. Even though we were both stuck in lockdown, and it would've been greater to do it in person, it was awesome to hear Alex talk so openly about issues he's faced. His advice around mental health I also try to reinforce to others on a daily basis, however tough things are right now... never give up. In this episode, I alongside Hannah (from MQ) and Rory O'Connor (suicide researcher) got together to bring awareness for mental health and suicide on world suicide prevention day. It was a podcast that saw me, share my personal story, with Rory sharing from his research and perspective what may have caused my dad to fall ill like he did. This interview really shocked me. I've had the pleasure of knowing Antonio Centeno for a while now, but what he shared in this interview was truly inspiring. Just finished up a lecture and wanted to record this episode sharing 5 lessons I wish I knew when I was 18. At 18, I had just faced the biggest turning point in my life. My Dad had taken his own life. I struggled with the grief, dealing with the why and I struggled to deal with anxiety and depression. In fact, things got pretty dark. From 21 I've been on a journey processing it, and trying to manage my own emotions. I decided to look back and think about 5 things I've personally learnt a long the way and I hope they help you too. Feeling guilty and want to stop? In this episode I talk about what you can do to get rid of guilt instantly. Guilt is a negative emotion. When you carry guilt, you carry negativity. We often feel guilty because of things we've done in the past, but understanding the root cause of guilt is the first step to letting go. Remember guilt is just an emotion, a thought, and you control your thoughts. Therefore start by taking responsibility and resolving whatever it is that's causing you guilt. Then forgive yourself. We all make mistakes, it's how we deal with the mistakes we make which defines us. Forgiving yourself will allow you to remove the feeling of guilt immediately. Letting go of the past is key too, you can't control anything you've done in the past you can only control what you do right now. Let go of the past and make change in the present. If I'm honest, I completely forgot about it until recently we were looking through things for some content for a documentary. To be honest, this interview really surprised me. For episode 3, I spoke to travel influencers Camille and Jean about the reality and pressures they face when it comes to social media. Their feed is inspiring, but at the same time I think it would be quite easy for some of us to compare our current lives to the travelling lifestyle they live. Also their relationship, would we compare the reality of our own relationship with what we see of theirs on social media? Guilt is something we all face, but I share a personal story about the guilt I carried (and still carry) around my Dad' suicide. When we lose someone there's normally an element of guilt that comes with it, feelings of doing more or regrets that we didn't spend more time with them. But I found that without dealing with that guilt it can drag us down. Without accepting, forgiving and embracing change we can't move on. This was a question I was asked in a recent interview with Alex Manzi from the Dreamers Disease Podcast and it really got me thinking. To be honest with you, I really wouldn't know what I would say or do. A few weeks ago I published a clip from this interview but I wanted to share the whole interview. I've given a lot of interviews recently but Alex asked some questions that made me dig deeper and share things I've never really openly shared before. This Saturday I got invited to talk to the 'Young Champions' by time to change. Sharing my story, but also sharing how creating videos can help inspire others. This was an amazing opportunity for me, to combine two things I'm hugely passionate about... Mental health awareness and social media marketing. In fact, it came at a time when I've been really thinking about the impact of sharing your story on social media. Over the past 6 months I've had countless messages saying that my videos and posts helped, but now, I'm also receiving messages of people who are sharing their story openly and saying that I inspired them to do so. In this episode I share a personal story about how wearing a mask kept my emotions hidden from those around me. I also share about how this mask was the same one my Dad wore, just before he took his own life. This is a personal, quick, but super important episode. And I'm hoping that this shows others that they no longer need to wear a mask too. Depression simply has no face. No matter how we perceive someone through how they act or what they say, we never truly know what they’re going through. To all of us, my dad was happy. My dad was outgoing, successful, loved and was excited for his future. But his mind told a different story. Whenever you meet someone, remove all preconceived judgements of who they are and their levels of happiness. Whenever you see someone on social media, look through the highlight reel and fake smiles. This is something I'm hugely passionate, now as a Dad, I realise just how important it is to focus on the next generation when it comes to mental health. This is someone you love. Whether it be a sibling, parent, friend or partner... This is someone you’d do anything for but their depression has put extreme strain on the relationship. How many more events can you miss because “they didn’t feel like it”? How many more mornings can you spend with them struggling to get out of bed? You’re surely fed up with the daily self pity, the complaining and the thought of them batting away every positive thing you say? This is someone who at first gave you everything you could imagine. They made you happy, they made you feel alive but behind that ‘mask’ lay hidden secrets that would later resurface. Has the relationship been a lie? Were they ever the person you once knew or were they always so unhappy and miserable? That thought alone is something that hits you hard. How long do you stick by them? How do you best support them through their depression? How do you make yourself feel good again? I’m going to try and answer how to support someone with depression from my own personal experience, learning from the mistakes I made with my Dad. I've never really shared this before... But on a recent Podcast interview with Alex Manzi of the Dreamers Disease, I spoke openly about my previous need for 'status'. A need that was purely driven from depression and my own insecurities. From the outside in I looked happy, I looked successful, but my mind, stress levels and bank balance told a completely different story. I was protecting my identity because I didn't want people to see how I felt inside. 18 months ago, I nearly lost my brother after he sustained a brain injury at work, just a few days after he was my best man at my wedding. Weeks later, as he still lay there in a coma, I sat in the lounge in 'my' 5 bedroom rented house and thought..."From the outside it looks like I have everything, but in reality I have nothing". If something happened to me, my family would be left with nothing. I'm writing and sharing this because I hope a life changing moment to yourself or a close family member isn't the thing that makes you realise that materialistic items won't make you happy, if it's covering up how you're feeling. But with my brother now home and recovering every single day, and with me now 'looking' less successful than I've ever been... I can honestly say, happiness = success. I recently had the honour to head into the Sky studios for an interview with Kay Burley on Sky News. I wanted to play you the interview, alongside giving you a bit of a background into how it happened. In the interview we spoke about the book, but also went into detail about my Dad's depression, his suicide, the way I dealt with it and the stigma that still surrounds mental health. It's only short, about 10 minutes long, but since it went live I've had numerous messages from people stating that it helped so I wanted to share it here. My biggest takeaway from it is just how important it is that we talk openly about mental health. That we say how we feel and we're not afraid to talk openly about suicide either. Just before Christmas in 2018 I sat down with Ellen for the Metro's Podcast called Mentally Yours. It was an honour to be featured, and I wanted to share the full conversation with you. In it, I talk about the need for us to start talking about suicide. With it affecting so many, but with many still suffering in silence, we need to start normalising the conversation. Grief in particular is something as a society we shift away from talking about, but when it's suicide, that silence becomes deeper. The more open we can be about suicide, hopefully the less people will feel alone. I see it as the big 'S' now, and we can almost relate it to when cancer was the big 'C'. A few weeks ago I spoke at a panel for The Whole Man Academy alongside David Gandy. Situated at Number 1 Savile Row at Gieves and Hawkes, it was a huge honour to share my story and highlight the need for men to talk more about mental health. Hearing David also open up too, highlighting the effects of social media and how even he has dealt with mental health problems in the past, it was refreshing to see such an open conversation around men and mental health. As a lot of you know, my background was in the fashion industry. Starting an online store when I was 19, running a men's fashion magazine and also creating a lot of videos around men's style and fashion. For the past year, I've focused heavily on raising awareness and changing the conversation we have around mental health and being able to combine both interests for this talk was really special. In the second episode of 'Coffee with Paul', one of questions I got asked was dealing with self doubt and I think it's something we've all struggled with at some point. For me, understanding that self doubt is put there by someone else is a really important shift. We're typically not born with self doubt, but parents, teachers, friends, partners or co workers will plant that voice of self doubt in our mind. Understanding this and trying to take control of that thought is so important. I also answer questions about whether mental health units are the answer to peoples problems, how to deal with lack of motivation and whether I'm looking after myself with the mental health work I'm doing right now. My Dad Could Still Be Alive... 10:11

So for this episode I grabbed the microphone and shared what's on my mind right now. A thought that's been pulling me down... "My Dad could still be alive knowing what I know now". It's led to a mixture of emotions, I feel proud because of how far I've come and everything I've discovered but I also feel guilty and sad that my Dad could still be alive. With it approaching 10 years since his suicide as well it makes it difficult for me to picture how my life would be if he was still alive. It leads into the point of this episode, that education around mental health is so important. We need to become better educated, to understand it better, in case a crisis hits. I didn't know how to support my Dad when he went through his depression because I simply wasn't educated on it. I wasn't taught how to deal with it. I'll continue doing what I do until we have more research, education and understanding. Hopefully my honesty in this episode helps, and I just wanted to say a huge thank you for listening! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I've spent the last two weeks really disconnected. I've rarely updated this Podcast, social media, and also disconnected from my phone altogether recently on a family trip to Tenerife. Honestly, that disconnect has been so refreshing and something I needed. In this episode, I look back on 2018 and explain why 2019 needs to be the year for prevention. It needs to be the year of change to help with this current mental health crisis. There was a huge amount of talk and and awareness in 2018, something I focused on, but with more people now seeking help and feeling less alone we need to start putting things in place to help those in need. Here's an interview I gave back in November for Maytree. I'm hoping this interview offers some value to you in two ways, through my honesty in the interview but also as an introduction into the amazing work that the Maytree do. Since giving this interview I reflected on how my Dad would've probably benefited from something like the Maytree, rather than being sectioned and spending time in a mental health unit on the NHS. If I'm honest, and this isn't true for every unit, the environment within these units really aren't beneficial for people struggling with mental health. In this interview we talk a little bit about the work they do at the Maytree, I discuss how my Dad being treated differently could have created a different outcome and also what he meant to me. "Grief With The Volume Turned Up" - Dealing With Suicide 13:09

Someone once explained suicide grief as "grief with the volume turned up". It really struck a cord with me, as I really did struggle to accept my Dad's suicide. Grief is hard, knowing that someone you love has gone can lead to a rollercoaster of emotions. As a British society too, we also struggle to talk about grief and people who've died. But suicide? It's almost like we have to be silent about the loss, but also silent about how it happened. I've been open and honest in the past about how I lied about my Dad's suicide, how I was angry, how I felt ashamed, and how I suffered in silence personally trying to hide the emotions that came with his death. In a recent talk for The Grace Dear Trust, I shared how it happened and how I struggled to deal with it. The Grace Dear Trust was set up after they lost their daughter/sister to suicide, so I wanted to talk about suicide bereavement as most people in the audience knew Grace too. So this was slightly different! I drove to Cardiff to visit fellow mental health campaigner Anneli Roberts of Pigletish.com a few weeks back and we recorded the conversation we had. We sat down on the sofa, hit record on the camera and spoke as openly and honestly as we could about mental health. From losing our parents at a similar age, to how we dealt with the grief, to coping mechanisms and what helps us day to day... this episode really is an honest one. It's funny, even though we were talking about some serious issues, things we both bottled up for years, it still seemed so normal to just chat with a cup of coffee and be able to relate to one another. Hopefully this goes to show that it is ok to talk, it is ok to share how you feel and that even though you feel alone... you're not.
