39. How to juggle the conflict between being a "good Asian mum" and the parent your children need
Manage episode 390020701 series 3374046
As parents, we want the best for our children, but how do we know when our expectations are reasonable, or if we are projecting inherited patterns and beliefs from our own upbringing, including our childhood trauma?
I have played guide, observer, counsellor and mentor to my children over the years, and there are many times I have got it wrong:
- When I reacted to childish outbursts with anger and judgment
- When I repeated old scripts from my past without asking if they were still true
- When I was more concerned about being the proverbial “good Asian mum” than how my children felt and what they needed
This episode looks frankly and honestly at six areas through a compassionate, values-based and trauma-informed lens:
- Navigating Parental Expectations
- Challenges of Conforming to Expectations
- The Importance of Connection and Communication
- Supporting Our Children’s Journey of Self-Discovery
- Reevaluating Parental Expectations
- Giving Grace, Supporting Growth
Here’s how I can support you further:
- Book a 30-minute call to discover how you can leverage your Quiet Achiever strengths and traits to become a Quiet Warrior in 12 weeks
- Need a gift idea? Order my inspirational book
- Meet fellow introverts for specially curated outings around Melbourne: Quiet Women Circle (women-only) and Introverts Around the World
