Electrik Cake with Coco Street 0174 - Songs from the 80s that predefine house music 01062025.
Happy 2025! Well, I called myself doing something special, like, unearthing my favorite tunes from the 80s and 90s that to me are the progenitors of house music - the songs that gave me understanding about "how house was built." As my story goes, the first time I heard house music and techno I fell in LOVE, because I understood its elements. I could hear pieces of music I'd grown to love so it made sense to me. I wanted this show to sort of push the reset button like a fresh start to redefine my own inspiration. I'm deciding what I'll do next creatively. I need fresh things, you know? But after completed my set, I checked out a conversation on social media from professionals and househeads that made me a bit crestfallen. They were discussing house music songs of yore they said need to be laid to rest. I must say I was a bit surprised to see some of the songs many were suggesting - many I still enjoy - but I can see where they were coming from. There is so much great music out there, and such great talent - but that is the nexus of my fight - Ageism. I also thought about the artists and vocalists that are still alive - many who are still touring and who make a living from those songs as we speak. I thought about how they would feel reading "the next time I hear that song I'm throwing a tomato!" I felt sad for them, and I imagined how I would feel if it were me! It seems an age old situation. We, in the name of progress, destroy the foundation. Entomb the classics and get them out of mainstream life. Put them in a time capsule and launch them into space - make room for the new! Destroy the landmarks and build new skyscrapers. Stop playing 90s house hire fresh faces. But I know that when the fresh faces discover the old gems, and hear those songs for the first time, they can't believe that they are old tunes and then instantly want to create a revision of it. So here I am, thinking I'm doing something special. Here's a bunch of old tracks I like. Don't throw a tomato at me, Y'all. The cheese stands alone.
