53:35Wellness. What is it and why should it matter to corporates? These are rather pertinent questions. As the world continues to battle Covid-19, the lines between work and home have blurred, perhaps permanently, and 'zoom calls' have become the norm. According to a recent study in the Harvard Business Review*, 85 per cent of workers surveyed said they were working longer hours but being less productive. 55 per cent said they were having trouble balancing work and home life, with the consequence that they are feeling less 'well'. Duncan Young is a specialist on workplace health and wellbeing and advises corporates globally on developing and implementing health and wellbeing programs. He has also developed a specialised wellbeing program called 'Build your ideal day', a 30 day challenge towards managing yourself better. In this episode, Duncan provides an interesting insight into how small changes to what we do in our daily routines can make material differences to our wellbeing, and why employee wellbeing is critical to improving overall corporate productivity.…

1:09:01Over the last 20 years there has been accelerated growth in house prices across the World's major cities, with Australian cities running towards the top of the pack. Average house prices in Sydney and Melbourne have increased between five to six times in the last two decades. At the same time real wages have run stagnant, leading to growing affordability pressures and making the “great Australian dream” of owning a home that much more difficult to achieve. Housing policy has, as a consequence, been at the centre of political competition between the major parties, with Governments prescribing policies from financial incentives to the private sector to deliver subsidised housing to straight public funding of new government housing – seemingly without material success in moving the needle. With a lack of access to affordable housing the visible outcome of growing inequality in our cities – what will it take to make housing work for everyone? And how do we get there?…

Telecommunications networks have transformed how we live, work, and play in our cities, with each technology generation leading to new ways of doing things. The next great technology shift – 5G – offers a promised land of instantaneous data and new technology horizons. But what actually is 5G? Can it deliver on the hype? He boasts a stellar career spanning politics, business and international relations - building closer business and government to government relations between Australia and Asia. He has in recent years focused on building closer economic relations with China - an effort that has earned him the moniker “Australia’s Mr China”. 1:18:49Seven of Australia’s top 10 trading partners are in Asia, with trading relations driven by a growing proportion of cross-border investment and people movement between Asian nations and Australia. The ability of all nations to turbocharge economic recovery post Covid-19 will depend on building trading and investment links between nations stronger than they have ever been before. But, in the wake of increasing geo-political strain between super powers and intense competition for strategic advantage between nations, the fragility of links between seemingly strong partners has been exposed prompting the need to renew and refresh trading relationships. My guest today is Mukund Narayana Murti, CEO of AsiaLink Business, which has just released a landmark report on how Australia can respond to the challenges ahead and win in Asia. He is daring Australian business leaders, policymakers and investors to get coordinated and get active post pandemic and move into a new era of inter-regional trade. He says close Australia-Asia relations at a corporate level are just as critical as relations between Governments. What are the challenges ahead for Australia in Asia and what will it take to win?…

1:07:28Communications and political strategist and Sky News contributor, Kristy McSweeney, joins this episode of Smarter Cities. As Australia struggles with a potential second wave of COVID-19, the depth and impact of locking down the economy, and providing unprecedented publicly funded support, is becoming apparent. Australia has a forecast budget deficit of almost 10% of GDP in 2020-21, and a sharp increase in net debt to over 35% of GDP, levels unimaginable less than twelve months ago. Massive stimulus packages announced in most nations to fight the virus has left the majority of advanced economies with net debt to GDP ratios above 100 per cent, with the red ink likely deepening as the fight continues. With governments increasingly being called on to intervene harder and faster to protect populations, keep people employed and chart a pathway out of the pandemic, and with a private sector waiting for COVID-19 conditions to ease, has COVID-19 changed the role of the public sector in the economy? Is this sustainable?…

1:05:15Covid-19 has brought much of the global economy to a stand-still, with containment of the virus in some countries but acceleration in others. Beyond the immediate health impacts, governments are now turning their minds to economic clean up. The IMF’s recent prediction has the world's largest economies – China, the US and the Euro area – set to experience massive year-on-year contractions in 2020 before being able to recover in 2021. Australia has fared better than most nations but faces tough challenges ahead in driving its economic recovery which, as an open trading nation, depends on the health of the world economy and a willingness to trade freely for success. But with international borders closed, ongoing threats of trade restrictions between the major powers, and a virus that we have still not learnt to live with, how realistic is this? Joining me to discuss this is former diplomat, founder of the International Business Accelerator, and host of the Business Beyond Boarders Podcast – Cynthia Dearin.…

1:23:09As people begin to return to work and school - limited by social distancing rules - the new normal has less people on busses and trains, in restaurants and cafes, and in office buildings. The success of technology in enabling the great work from home experiment has business questioning if staff working from home can be made a permanent thing. Education systems are asking if home schooling options can be expanded and people are asking if long commutes to central business districts are worth the time and effort - if productivity can be sustained through technology platforms. Public policy advocate and Chairman of the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue, Christopher Brown, joins Smarter Cities to discuss the challenge of the new normal. Is the case for the city being disrupted by a post Covid-19 world?…

As countries begin to consider easing restrictions on business and social distancing, many are turning to technology to prevent a rise in second wave infections. Singapore and Australia, amongst others, have introduced new contact tracing applications to track new infections and prevent further spread of the virus. A global workforce has begin working from home, placing renewed emphasis on telecommunications infrastructure and technology platforms to reliably keep the world working and learning as the virus plays out. Joining me to discuss this is Owen Prime, CTO of Australian technology success story Noggin, whose software is now in government agencies and organisations in Australia, Europe and America enabling responses to Covid-19 and the move to the new normal.…

59:24The world’s population is ageing. Virtually every country in the world is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older persons in their population - driven by declining fertility and longer lifespans. According to the UN, 1 in 6 (16%) of people will be over the age of 65 by 2050 up from 1 in 11 (9%) in 2019. With this comes fundamental implications for how we prepare, manage and fund public services in cities and maintain productivity growth to ensure increasing standards of living. Key to this is also how, in an era of technological change, people prepare for and live in retirement. My guest today is Manish Prasad - CEO of Ignition Advice one of a growing number of Fintech based companies making wealth management accessible. Can the growing challenges of population ageing be confronted with technology? 1:09:20The drift of people leaving regional and rural communities is a growing trend across the world as people move to chase economic opportunities in the big cities. Facing economic decline, regional and rural communities are fighting back at the ballot box - most notably by electing President Trump, voting for Brexit in the UK and for One Nation and Independents in Australia - supporting politicians who promise to revitalise regional economies and provide their communities with a fairer share of prosperity. John Persinger, CEO of the Erie Downtown Development Corporation in the US State of Pennsylvania, joins Smarter Cities to talk about how his private sector backed organisation is revitalising his regional city of 100,000 people. How does a regional city pivot and what are the challenges to success?…
