There is a fun meme/topic going around the internet these days that can be applied to loads of different situations. It’s called Fuck around and find out.

Today, let’s look at what that means in the wine world and have some fun.
There are rules.

But we aren’t just here to talk about breaking rules, there are also accidents and mistakes. And the wines we are about to check on are fun wines.

Let’s start with the rule breakers

  • In the older world of wine, places like Europe, there are STRICT rules about how to make a wine. These rules are in place to manage quantities, quality of production, consistency, representation of a region.
  • They need to proudly wear their region on their chest.
  • More broadly, in Italy you have the Designation of Origin laws that break wines into tiers.
  • It is often seen as a way to assist in identifying quality. Keep in mind though that quality is measured in consistency and following the rules. Even within the tiers, some wines are better than others but each tier is following (or not) the rules put in place.

And now, you know what we have? We have Super Tuscans!
And what about our friend Bob Ross and happy accidents?
There are plenty of stories that have been shared but Dom Perignon wasn’t a random guy who walked in on a second fermentation and blushed.

But the process of sparkling wine came about by accident due to the weather of the region. When wine is chilled to a low enough point, fermentation stops. When warmed up again, it can start a second fermentation – this is literally part of the champagne method.

Naturally, this was not a controlled experiment and was in contrast to wines of the time – still.
Wine I enjoyed - Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2018
Glass used - Riedel Vinum Bordeaux
Enjoy the whole episode, cheers!
