According to the CDC, around 17% of American adults aged 20 and over were involved in a special diet on any given day between 2015-2018. Whether to lose weight, achieve a certain physical aesthetic, optimize health, or prevent chronic disease, the tricky world of food consumption (or the avoidance of it) plagues almost every community. From this arises an array of eating patterns and ideals that can sometimes cause more harm than good. The food and nutrition space is also one where a fountain of misinformation online usually arises. Is there an ideal diet for the American population? How harmful can the ketogenic diet become? Do you have to turn vegetarian or vegan to be nutritiously healthy? Does intermittent fasting actually work? What is a "heart-healthy diet"?

We are joined today by Michelle Routhenstein from New York City, a registered dietitian nutritionist, preventive cardiology nutritionist, and certified diabetes educator with over ten years of experience. She received her BS in Nutrition and Dietetics, as Cum Laude, from New York University in 2010, where she also attained her MS in Clinical Nutrition in 2012. Michelle is the Owner and President of Entirely Nourished, a nutrition counseling private practice focusing on chronic disease prevention and management, specializing in heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. She has been the Chief Medical Officer of Oben Health and the Preventive Cardiology Specialist at Cardiatrics. Currently, she stands as one of the 2023 Forbes Health Advisory Board members.
