Have you ever lost faith, hope, or courage? Felt like you didn’t belong? Or wished you could pick your family like you do your friends?
Set in Montreal in the 1980’s and told from the perspective of an orphaned girl with a strong-will (played by Keris Hope Hill), Rosie is a ground-breaking, bilingual, Indigenous, queer, Canadian movie written, directed, & produced by Gail Maurice. It stars co-producer, Melanie Bray in the lead role of “Fred” (Frédèrique), the child’s francophone aunt, whom she ends up having to live with.
On the verge of being evicted from her apartment, jobless, and making art from items she finds in the trash, Fred is in no position to take care of Rosie. But with the support of her two gender-bending friends, Flo (played by Constant Bernard) & Mo (played by Alex Trahan), she manages her new responsibility and Rosie adjusts to a new community.
I caught up with Gail & Melanie on the red-carpet at the 2023 Canadian Screen Actors Awards, where Rosie was nominated for Best Achievement in Writing, to talk about Gail’s 25-year journey in getting this film made, the importance of believing in yourself (as so many women don’t), and not giving-up.
