Relatively minimal research is devoted to menopause even though menopause affects literally 100% of women that live past the age of 50. For women of color, the situation is far more dire.. Not only do we know less about the impact of medical conditions or therapies in mid-life black women but it is incredibly challenging for many black women to access appropriate care. My guest is Dr. Fenwa Milhouse, a urologist who is not only a talented surgeon, but uses social media to destigmatize pelvic floor & sexual conditions, as well as demonstrate the importance of representation in medicine.
Dr. Streicher and Dr. Milhouse discuss:
- DISEASES that disproportionately affect Black women
- How HYSTERECTOMY impacts cardiovascular disease in Black women
- Why Black women are less likely to take HORMONE THERAPY
- BLACK CELEBRITIES and increasing awareness of health conditions
- BARRIERS to health care in Black underserved community
- Micro and Micro AGRESSIONS in the health care system
- The reason for and impact of IMPLICIT BIAS
- The challenges of a BLACK WOMAN UROLOGIST practicing in a white hospital
- The importance of DIVERSITY EQUITY and INCLUSION initiatives in our health system
- What impacts racial disparity and potential action steps to improve health in the Black community
- How SYSTEMIC RACISM impacts on health
