The impact of religion and culture on sexual function…and dysfunction is fascinating and complex. In this episode I am joined by Dr. Seemena Rahman, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ob-Gyn at Northwestern University and one of the few experts in the study of the impact of religion on sexual function. Dr. Rahman published a pivotal scientific paper in Sexual Medicine Reviews about female sexual dysfunction among Muslin women
Dr. Streicher and Dr. Rahman discuss:
  • The impact of colonialism on sexual expression in the Muslim world
  • In general, the impact of religion on sexuality
  • If religious women tend to have more sex, or less sex
  • The impact of maintaining virginity prior to marriage on sexual satisfaction later in life
  • Religions that emphasize that female pleasure is as important as male pleasure
  • If the timing of intercourse is dictated in religions other than Judaism
  • Buddhism and sexual practices
  • The attitude of various religions on oral sex, anal sex, and masturbation?
  • Religious attitudes towards post menopause sex when reproduction is no longer possible
  • If pleasure or reproduction is emphasized in most religions
  • Sexual dysfunction and sexual abuse in Muslim women
  • If observant women get better care from a doctor who is the same religion
