Arrive at Tomorrow's Goals Faster by Reversing Time

When it comes to nailing your next big goal or New Year resolution, forget the “To-Do List” and “next steps”.

After all, how many “steps” are there going to be?

The answer is a lot.

It often paralyzes the most ambitious and prevents them from starting.

Try this instead: Imagine you’ve already attained the goal. CONGRATULATIONS! 🙌

You nailed it!

Now, look back – assess the path you took and ask one simple question:

“What were the habits, skills, and traits that brought me here?”

A promotion, a published novel, or developing a captivating stage presence?

Rewind the tape.

The promotion…

You notice years of dedication to learning and mastering new skills, including the courage to voice your ideas.

The captivating public speaker…

You hired a coach, devoted yourself to tireless rehearsals and refined your delivery.

Once you’ve identified the core, related habits, skills and traits it’s time to begin tracking them.

This is the beauty of working backward.

It unveils the “how” – the essential habits – that will provide the transformation from dream and “I hope” into "I am.”

It unveils a simpler path.

By following P.A.R.R. anyone can develop habits, skills and traits “on demand.”

* Plan: Identify 3-5 key habits to cultivate – habits that will become the building blocks of your desired traits and skills. Maybe it's writing daily for that novel, practicing presentations for stage prowess, or taking online courses for that promotion.

* Act: Practice the behavior as planned.

* Record: Track your progress and write notes daily about each planned practice session.

* Reassess: Analyze your progress after each 28-day tracking period (four weeks). Adjust your approach as needed, and celebrate course corrections.

* For step-by-step instructions on PARR and a free “habits-to-goals” tracking sheet, visit: https://thehabitfactor.com/templates

The P.A.R.R. methodology for on-demand habit, skill and trait development is about incremental progress in developing the essential habits, skills and traits that will propel your goal’s attainment.

So, rewind from your ideal future. Start PARR-ing your way toward your most important goals and ideals.

Often, the most scenic route is worth envisioning multiple times.

Enjoy the show!

P.S.: From the world of statistics: All models are flawed, but some are useful.

With this in mind, we asked Google’s AI experiment Bard to “break” the “Three Circles of Behavior System” model (perhaps a future post).

The short story (no pun intended) is he/she/IT could not.

The best Bard offered: “What about people who aren’t aware of their unconscious stories/thinking?

It’s a good question and a nice attempt. However, an unconscious story is still a story (represented within the model), and that is the point of the latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY where the latest version of the model was revealed.

BTW: YOU are invited to try and “break” the “Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” model as well.

If you think you can, please email or leave comments here.

*Note: ChatGPT’s has no knowledge of the model yet, which was officially published in October of 2022. GPT’s latest update is from January 2022.
