Barton and Lauren sit down to discuss how an athlete's mindset is pivotal to long term success and wellbeing for the athlete and person striving to compete. In this hour long interview, Barton and Lauren discuss how she realized there was such a need for a "Re-Imagined" Coaching concept to help these athletes stay healthy mentally, emotionally and physically while preparing for competition.

About Lauren:
I started swimming when I was five because my mom says I had WAY too much energy and was asking for A LOT of snacks during my sisters’ swim meets. Since I was already there she signed me up for the team and well, as ‘they’ say, the rest is history.
I LOVED everything about swimming. From the laughter with my teammates to the hard sets to dancing at swim meets like an absolute fool listening to CDs on a discman (yes, I’m THAT old). It was my world, and I never wanted to leave.
For 17 years I had the privilege of calling myself an elite athlete, even making it to a D1 program on a full ride. While I was wildly successful by all counts - KY high school state champ, top 3 finisher in the Mid American Conference - there was a snag. I was a perfectionist whose expectations were so high, nothing less than PR was acceptable anytime I dove in the water.
I didn’t know how else to be. I was a driven go-getter who literally felt a constant pressure to perform at my peak every. single. time no matter if I was in the depths of hell with training or fully tapered. It was perfection or bust. It was PR or nothing. There was no middle ground.
I didn’t know how to get out of my own head! And while all of my coaches told me I was there (yes, thank you Captains Obvious) I was never told HOW to get out of it. Just to ‘figure it out’. I found my way out sometimes, but I always chalked it up to being a fluke. Not something I could consciously do if I worked at it.
So alas, when I was finally forced to retire in 2004, I left thinking, '“ugghhhhhh I could have been so much more had I just figured out how to get out of my own head.”
Fast forward to September 2021, the postponed 2020 Olympic Games. As I watched Simone Biles remove herself from competition and Katie Ledecky hide emotion after winning Gold but it not reflecting her best performance, I started to think about the mental well-being of athletes. Minutes later Michael Phelps said what I didn’t know I had been thinking for over 30 years. “Competing [at this level] is really overwhelming. We just want someone to talk to. We just want someone who listens and allows us to be vulnerable and doesn’t want to fix us.”
BOOM! There it was. It finally all made sense. I could take the experiences from swimming and combine them with education and training I received after it to give athletes what I never got - the HOW behind getting out of your own head. And thus Performance Reimagined was born - to support elite student-athletes like you to train your minds like you train your bodies.
