How can religious networks assist in reducing mental health crises? In this session, Neelley Hicks, M.Div. will share how NASMHPD's TAMAR (Trauma, Addiction, Mental health, And Recovery) program is providing trauma-informed community care in houses of prayer as well as non-religious settings. TAMAR was developed in the late 1990s as part of a federally funded program for incarcerated women in Maryland. It has since been implemented in multiple justice and behavioral health systems across the nation and used in various faith-based and community programs internationally. The original TAMAR intervention was updated in 2019 to create a clinical intervention that combines psychoeducation about trauma and its impact with concrete techniques designed to help participants of any gender identify their triggers and learn and practice skills for self-regulating trauma symptoms.
